10 years of this garbage. 10 years of lag, poorly thought out events, and shitty staff communication.
I think I've got a case of Stockholm Syndrome with this damn site. I just can't leave it, no matter how much bullshit I put up with.
You'd think after 10 years staff would know what the users want but apparently not. Can't even tell how often a thread like this one was made and it never changed a thing for more than a couple of days which is really sad...
To people who say "IF YOU COMPLAIN, I BET YOU DON'T CONTRIBUTE TO THE SITE"
While it's not all done by Paypal and such, I can assure you I spent about 5000$ on Subeta, maybe more. I slowed down my paypal purchases because, as I said on page 1 or 2, I'm not satisfied with a lot of small things. It's not even huge things! Just small things that seems to be forgotten, or ignored.
There is a lot of good about this site. Keith messaged me when I said I was not totally happy and WHICH OTHER BIG SITE OWNER would do that. Answer, not a lot. The fact that he asked me in the first place, is a step in the right direction. I'm really hoping that some of the small issues will be fixed soon. Because I care about this site, I care about Keith a lot, but there is still so many things who slightly irritate me.
It's like a long term relationship really. You're in it, so obviously the big things can't be pissing you off to call quits, but after a while, it's the little things which end up bogging you down.
Subeta needs to pick a side. Either we're a business or a game, but they can't continue to run it 50% like both and claim the other side when something goes belly up. Cash shop, monetary issues, wearables, or art consistency and we're told they're a business who has to think about money. Transparency, communication, long downtime, and we're told they're a game and it's insinuated that because of that they don't have to offer the commonalities a business would provide. Pick a side, Subeta.
I've had tickets responded to in the wee hours of the morning when I expected staff were 'asleep', which was excellent, so I know it isn't that you guys were 'sleeping, literally'. No updates of any sort for eight hours of continuous downtime? If literally every staff member was asleep, that's impressive, because you have staff scattered across time zones in North America, plus at least one staff member in the UK.
If there was a single staff member awake to notice the downtime, regardless of their ability to post to Subeta's Twitter or Facebook pages, they should have alerted a staff member who could update one of those things... or rather, they should have the ability to alert a staff member who could update one of those things. Give a few folks a raise and tell them that they get to be on-call if shit hits the fan. All it takes is an update to each of the two social media accounts saying, "Hey, we know this problem exists," and then you can all go back to being simultaneously asleep.
What's that saying? "A customer who has a great experience will tell a few friends. A customer who has a horrible experience will tell everyone." Bad publicity spreads faster than good, unless you're like handing out free $100 to everyone who enters the door. lol
I really don't appreciate these, "It was insert online group here who brought the site down. no other info because this is an offhand remark" because unless you have 100% proof they did this, you're going to piss someone off one day and they will attack subeta coughslongcatcoughs. This really doesn't even need to be said at all unless a group hacked personal info (credit card numbers, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, passwords) Then by all means tell us who it was if you know.

This. I was under the impression (apparently mistaken) that every staff member had Keith's (and/or other programmer's) phone number. If that's not the case, then it should be. Honestly, even all minimods should have it. As soon as any of them is online and notices long periods of downtime or crippling lag, they should be able to call someone.
It's a bit harsh the way you phrased it, but I've been feeling like this more and more since the anniversary.
We just celebrated Subeta being around for a full decade, and the site is still struggling to stay alive. There have definitely been improvements, there's no denying that. It's just that after ten years you'd think there would have been more.
I laughed to myself during the net neutrality thing when people got a message saying something like "if the site was still loading, would you still be here?" Yes, yes we would. And we are. We struggle through lag, half-finished features, and constant bugs, but we all stick around because we love the site. It just doesn't seem to be enough.
Honestly, the site feels like it's been in beta (Subeta, lol) this whole time, and it's kind of hard to understand why. I'm just kind of becoming jaded about everything after all this time, and I feel bad thinking like that.

Harsh? Yes. But I'm kinda that way anyway, and it was ass crack in the morning for me and I was grumpy that I had to go to work XD
I and anyone else on Facebook would've liked to have gotten a post of something about the downtime, and if possible an update saying the site is back up.The same for the twitter users.
Its as bad as the sudden drastic changes you have made without telling anybody cough2013 Pandemic Event coughMaybe someone on staff could at lease login to their Ipad or Iphone to check.
And if this is problem with certain people,(losers)or a group(of lifeless losers) then why don't you hire a private investigator to look into this, then get whatever information and file charges.I'll bet if it is the same people, they're doing nothing but swinging in and out of jail.
That's why they don't DDos Subeta every year because they keep going in and out of jail.If you hire a private investigator, you'll probably find they have multiple police charges on their record.
Like a good neighbor, stay over there!

Okay, I've waited to give some input to make sure I could collect my thoughts.
The problem with things not being updated, whether it's the onsite error message, twitter, tumblr, or even the facebook, is that this isn't a new occurrence. We're promised better attention, get it for a week, and then, slide back. It's not even so much that nothing was said, it's more, for me, that this has been a constant problem for a literal decade. In ten years of running a site, of up and down, of actual raids and server upgrades, of plots both good and bad, of user base growing, of massive Martenez battling, this topic comes up on a weekly basis. The site has moved a few times to "better" hosting, to "more" and "more reliable" servers, and yet, you're still essentially caught fucking the dog when company comes over. And not even unexpected company, you knew Aunt Judy and Scott and Troy and the kids were coming, because they always drop by on Thanksgiving, more so now that Uncle Lee is dead... And yet, there you sit, Doritos in one hand, cock in the other, Rover crying, completely FLABBERGASTED that someone walked in and was shocked at such a display, how ? Ten years and you're still surprised the site has a crash ? Not only crashed, but down for almost half a day ? Flippant gamergate excuse ? NO contingency plan to keep users informed ? No staff contingency plan to keep the site monitored and set an alert system to those who handle the PR ?
No one here running the site is a child anymore. It is well past time for this to be "cute" or "Well they started it as a teen." Either you are not using a reliable server, hosting, or simply don't or can't or hell won't get any better resources, physical hardware, programmers to, you know, stop the complaining, be able to set better security, code more features, optimize loading, and all the buzzwords they can do. (I love my code friends, but, dang, buzzwords.)
Not only are we still dealing with lag and crashes and downtime to such an extent that it's become an expected part of gameplay, but we're making excuses within ranks ! It's YOUR fault for battling. No it's YOUR fault for not buying enough CSC ! No it's YOUR fault for refreshing to see if the site was up ! It's NOT OUR FAULT. We don't have any control on stopping, fixing, or preventing crashes, we just are the unhappy end users trying to have fun.
The bottom line is look, if we didn't actually ENJOY PLAYING WHEN SUBETA WORKS WE WOULD NOT BE HERE TRYING TO KICK YOU IN THE ASS TO GET YOUR SHIT SORTED SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO PLAY.
Hm, yep think that covers it for now.
ps lolwhat private investigators are you serious ?
pps I find it hilarious that i found a raffle ticket posting this.
collecting Definitely one of the most important takeaways from this thread.

I agree with the point made in the opening post. It's very frustrating being told to check Twitter and Facebook for information when the site is having problems only to find that there isn't any information.
I lost the last day of my one week GA because the site was down all that time. I wouldn't have been so annoyed about it if there had been an explanation about the technical problems and what was being done to sort things out.
If I could kiss a post.
Also, that's one hell of a metaphor (also kind of gross, tbh)
I'm not really going to read through the pages that I've missed since the last time that I did because this thread took a weird turn, but I will say some things and this will probably be my last response here.
I spent the last part of last week building out more internal tools for staff members, which has a few features that I think will really come in handy.
Things I'm spending the start of this week working on:
We're listening to you. There are some things that are absolutely out of our control (DDoS attacks) that the best thing we can do is try to mitigate it when it starts. Typically we'd be protected from them (because of excellent support from cloudflare and our own server side protections) but in that case the attackers scoped out Subeta and found some pages that no data was cached (mostly by finding pages that took the longer to load on a "cold" refresh) and attacked those pages - which is a little different from a typical DDoS attack and took us a lot longer to figure out wtf was going on. We've patched up those pages but I'm sure there are other existing flaws like that, that are very difficult for us to find on our end.
And there are some things that are absolutely within our control which means keeping the site up most of the time otherwise, which we're always in the process of working.

I still don't understand what gamergate had to do with any of this?

Yeah... that's kind of part of the issue here.
Unfortunately, you're not some big hotshot CEO who is so busy making money and managing 100 different departments that you don't have time to deal with the bottom of the chain. You're a small site owner ignoring your main source of income and then simultaneously blaming us and everyone else.
I suppose I should be glad to see that you're making an effort, though.

I don't see what 'weird turn' the thread made... Nor do I understand how you would know that the thread took a "weird turn" had you not read the thread...?
It's rather disappointing that you chose to ignore this thread for the last 4 days and then when you respond, it is in such a dismissive manner. Here you have multiple members, many of which have been around for many years, giving you feedback and you are essentially saying that you aren't going to read our thoughts or respond.... Makes one wonder why this forum even exists?
Is there anything being done to ensure that someone with the ability to make the FB post/tweet actually looks at the site every couple hours? It doesn't matter who can tweet, if staff are all going to be sleeping at the same time...
