I know I am a bit late to the party but remember to keep on topic guys and stop the personal attacks! If you want to debate the meaning of a word, there is a lovely debate forum for you to use! This is an announcement board.

I know I don't have a purple icon here but there are no MMs in this forum.

There was a time when the word gypsy was viewed as an acceptable term. Hence the "gypsy" items on Subeta. Hell, stores like Walmart are still selling gypsy Halloween costumes.
this just in: racial stereotypes are acceptable as long as big name companies are still selling tacky halloween costumes of them

Yup, we aren&;t changing it because it&;s a CW. :)
I don't understand this logic

Why aren't CWs being held to the same standards with regard to names as real items? Does staff really think that users will be any less offended by the item if it's a CW and not an official item? Why can't the creator of that CW be asked to come up with a new name?

With there being an exception made for a CW, this change seems rather superficial, and it also makes it seem like the site's need for money is more important than the site's desire to be mature and non-offensive.

I 100% agree!

I never thought gypsy was a bad word, honestly. Please don&;t jump on me for that but I honestly never knew. I didn&;t know people thought gypsies were thieves either... I guess I just live under a rock but I&;ve been informed now..
Have you heard of the word 'gyp' / 'gypped'? A semi-common term used for being ripped off, conned, or cheated? It's presumed to be directly derived from the word 'gypsy' due to racial sterotyping.

they/them, it/it, or no pronouns (use name/descriptors), please! [flower=Werewolf]

Descriptions still aren't showing as fixed for me, so I'm not sure if this other CW was noticed or not:

Way more stereotypical than the other, clearly-Esmeralda wig cw. Note: I think the wig should be renamed too, if for consistency if nothing else. And I'm not saying Esmeralda doesn't have issues, just that it's hard to stuff that Disney-cat back in the bag and anything negative in that description is clearly reference to that specific depiction.

Edit: And editing my post appears to duplicate it. Cool story.

The amount of people on this thread who are saying it shouldn't be considered a slur just because they've never never heard of it being one is honestly incredibly disheartening. How arrogant to put a personal and clearly outdated opinion over the opinions of the actual Roma people who have come out and said that this word is, and has always been, used offensively toward them.

I suppose we just shouldn't try and overcome the ingrained racist behavior in our society because it might inconvenience someone else in some minor way (like having the name of an item changed on a pet site), right? It's much easier to just "get over" a reinforced racial stereotype than it is to remember the changed item name.

Sarcasm and annoyance aside, I'm so glad staff had a mature viewpoint in this case and realized the need for a change.

I do not understand the hostility on this thread. The fact that not everyone was even aware of this gypsy-racial issue does not warrant some of the comments made by some people.

As I already pointed out, this was not an issue as I was growing up, and totally took me by surprise when I saw Keith&;s post. I still do not understand why it is classed as a racial slur, but there you go shrugs

agrees I've never been aware of "gypsy" being a racial slur - maybe I have been living under a rock for over 30 years, or maybe it's more of a problem in certain countries / areas.... no idea.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm pleased to see the items names have been changed, seeing as it apparently is a racial slur :)

That's not quite what I said, but hey, spin my post however you want to try to make your point.

MY ACTUAL POINT is simple: If people are not assholes toward the people that are truly confused about this word, and they looked at the big picture to see WHY there was confusion (answer: because society as a whole does NOT view this word as taboo as other slurs, as indicated by the Halloween costumes and tv shows that still use the word), they may be able to help those people understand why the word shouldn't be used. Attacking someone that is admitting to being ignorant to why this is a bad word to use is a very poor way to go about enlightening/educating others. ✌

Sorry if this has already been asked, but are pet/usernames containing gypsy or gypsies going to be changed?

since this still hasn't been answered. IMO pet and usernames should be changed too (free, since some people may not be aware that this is a slur). It doesn't make sense for user/pet names to be an exception when items and NPCs will no longer be using this word.

I've heard it maybe a handful of times in my life but never seen it written so I thought it was written as jip or something and had nothing to do with it... There's me living under a rock again (sigh)

There goes any semblance of free speech left on this site. It makes sense for it to not be in actual site content but going further than that is a slippery slope. Gypsy unlike the counterpart used for reference to a black person isn't viewed nearly as badly as some other words(Lady Gaga and some other "artists" even use it as a song name). There were people such as Gypsy Rose Lee and Gypsy Boots, there are also places named Gypsy. You are trying to be far too overreaching.

Petnames and usernames are very different in my opinion. Unless it is becomes a disallowed word on the site as a whole, I don't see forcing people to change those. I mean what if someone's name is actually Gypsy? OH NO YOU CANNOT HAVE THAT USERNAME CAUSE IT IS BANNED I DON'T CARE IF IT IS YOUR NAME.

Items and such I can understand, but not usernames and petnames. Those were created by users unlike the items that were changed.

[edit] Before anyone come in saying that Gypsy is not a real name...you are talking to someone named Destiny. I am sure it has happened.

If whether or not a word is in the filters affects which names are allowed, then there'd be a lot more pets who need to be renamed. I remember "Dick" being mentioned in a thread about the filters, and there are probably others.

Explain to me how being consistent on the site as far as not allowing a word is impeding on your free speech?

I just saw posts saying custom item names and descriptions were going to be changed, and those are also user created. This is why I'm asking about pet and usernames, it doesn't make sense to target some user created content and not all of it.
