I think this is kinda silly. Like several people have mentioned, I never knew it to be a slur (until resding the insanity web that is tumblr). Shows like Gypsy Sisters and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding exist too. nThe change here isn't really a big deal (unless people will have to change user/pet names or stories), but I hope it's not the start of catering to the pearl clutching offensive police.nWhat's next? Fetus pops? At least people have beem bitching about them for years here. This is the first case of this word/items being offensive here that I've seen.
I'd say there's a pretty big difference between racism and someone getting upset about cartoon gore.

I think it is childish regardless, good or bad. (though no real opinion from me.) Though I seen worse happen on other sites with people being severely rude and downright threatening, so for the fact it seem to go smoothly here I am content with that.
I was taught that words like gypsy or its German translation are slurs so personally I welcome this change (also because I like the word nomad a lot more), thank you.
Late as usual but who cares? Reading over all of this, all I can think is, "Fucking SJW's."
It's not so much the removal of a word as it is what the fuck we're deciding to change and where. Get up, get out of your house, and help feed the homeless or something. Stop. Obsessing. Over. Words. It's stupid thinking such as this that god Jason Bigg's fired from TMNT because "THOSE WORDS HURT MY FEELINGS!" There are kids dying in your own backyard every day and yet you decide to fight nasty words... That's like taking on a kitten as a show of strength. It's not, and it only makes you look weak as hell with skewed priorities.
Honest to god, I'd be more concerned with how "gypsies" treat their women than the fact that subeta was fine with using a "racial slur." (Do you have any idea how misogynistic Gypsy society is? It's like they got stuck in the 1800's and never evolved from there.)
I'm really glad this was changed, but for the record it's perfectly 100% possible to live under a rock and not know how slanderous this word is.
The media as a collective whole (stage names, song names, band names, tv shows, and in movies) uses the term 'gypsy' quite freely and when no one makes a stand about it, the masses will assume it's okay. No I'm 100% not saying that makes it okay, I'm saying it is what it is. Personally I didn't know it was offensive until an episode of House many years ago, I remember being like "waaat??" about it, before turning to google. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have known until like, this board.
Lastly I'm also very glad pet/user names are being left alone. That is a very slippery slope that could easily drive pet people far from subeta. Someone remarked about how does a few names censor? Because today it's a name and tomorrow it's every single nomadic traveling pet. Or any pets with 'gypsy' on the page. Then it'll turn into well what about everything that offends everyone? Then we've become neopets, where two male pets holding hands is a feeezable offense.
Hooray and all for the change, but I also have to agree with and here too.
Looking back at history, the world seems to have done a 360 nowadays where we are almost too concerned with words and offending someone. Being politically correct can be good, but hey, only to a point. Then it gets obsessive.
Your third paragraph took me aback. All Rom everywhere? They're all stuck in the 1800's? Every single one? That's an awfully broad brush with which to paint every member of a group. Grouping all members of a culture/group into one stereotype, especially a super negative one used to justify mistreatment, exclusion and oppression, is exactly the issue at hand.
There are lots of other cultures where misogyny is problematic too (including ours!). Doesn't make the use of slurs okay there either.
As always, Andrea's totally on point. <3
Telling me something I already know will not defeat my original argument. Women within their "culture" literally "belong in the kitchen." They aren't allowed to leave their homes without their husbands say-so and they have to do all the chores, whether they want to or not. (There's also some much darker, non-pg13 stuff I could mention but I don't want to trigger anyone who's been attacked/raped. So I'll just leave it here.)
That's frigging slavery and I don't care if I've wrongly thrusted a stereotype onto a bunch of people who don't fit the bill. That's unavoidable. If they're that troubled by it, they'd be doing their damnedest to make sure the rest of their society wasn't know for such barbarism and no, my opinion on them won't change until their society does. At least, til they make it legal for their women to be autonomous and free; able to sue and prosecute and find protection within their flocks, like we have here. Sure, it's not perfect yet but at least we've been given the choice.
