If you're seriously never giving out free beer again then why not change the item name to "not-so-free beer" :P
4k isn't bank breaking but when you keep asking us to get like 200 of them at a time, over and over, it adds up.
I mean seriously let's just say that a user has 30,000 free beers sitting in their shop for the lowest price (assume 4k) and several achievements come out for doing something with 200 of them per achievement. If everyone who didn't hoard free beers has to buy it from this person who has the lowest price, and all 30,000 beers get bought, that's like, 120,000,000 sp that person gets for free, just because they used an autorefresher that one time. I don't really see how that isn't a reward for hoarding.
Ahaha omg does this ever happen XD (And yeah I remembered it was you then I spied on your status!)
@ free beer, I guess I underestimated the impact that big free beer hoards have on the site, especially now after all the sinks. I never found it so awful because if they were coded out of all the "profitable" features, then... is it still that game breaking? If wants to sit forever on a million of them, is it harmful, even though it's one line of code? If staff says it is, then I shall believe it, though.
And yeah if technically concoctions were once "free" to get upon refreshing but eventually got fixed, I supposed free beer could get a "fix" too :/ But then again, probably not many people stuffed themselves with concoctions before the fix and outside of Morostide, only a limited amount of people could get them anyway.
I really like that idea. XD I've seen a few confused newbies around who'd probably have appreciated it.
I'm fine with no more beer being given out but I wonder how much will just stay in people's hoards rather than being sold and used up. Creating more incentives to get rid of it won't necessarily help get rid of beer people won't sell.
I've seen them too and it's kind of awkward having to explain that the free beer isn't actually free and they have to buy it up. I also agree with your other statement. People hoard things. For different reasons but the reason I've seen most is that there's usually a reward for that hoarding. People also sit on currencies and giving higher prices to items that use that currency isn't going to make them stop sitting on it. A little off topic but it's the same to me. People will sit on certain things, items or sp, and not give it up. And I don't think anything will make them.
It just irks me that I've repeatedly heard "we don't like hoarding" but at every single opportunity they turn around and reward those that hoard. Either say "fine, hoard" and carry on exactly the way they are, or actually buckle down and stop with the rewarding.
Every time I hear "don't hoard" I'm inclined to think, "they're just kidding, I should hoard it because I know that some day it'll pay off." And it usually does! Don't hoard currencies? I spend over 600 quest points. A few days later there's an achievement for having x amount of quest points.
Really.
I mean, I think the only reason they keep making achievements and stuff to try to get rid of the Free Beer is because they're hoping that it will, well, get RID of it? They don't WANT that number on the site.
That said, I do think that staff should buy up at least MOST of the ones in shops, perhaps starting from the most expensive? Idk. If there's, say, 200k in a shop, buy all but 2k of it up? And then delete them?
Edit: I just realized that would pump millions into the economy, and we'd be fucked. Ugh. We'll be feeling this mistake for a while, I guess.
That was requested by users, along with some other achievements we released during the Anniversary. :)
Like Keith said, we learned from our mistake about how long an item stays out (free at that) etc. When we have 5 million of an item on site, we aren't going to release more. We are using free beer for things so that they have some use rather than rotting away in peoples vaults because we really don't need 5 million of one item having no use other than feed to a pet. Just searching free beer right now shows a shop selling 10,803 of them for 4,000 sP. It's not exactly free but it's pretty darn close!
I'm sure the price will drop again (it does that) once the excitement of the genetech combo passes and once Alegarten is over (and you can't feed Gunter drinks anymore).
Exactly! I still have a relatively small amount (133) of free beer stashed away in case of another sink at a time I won't have the funds to buy them. Hoarding always pays off here, whether it's just regular items, currencies or event items. I don't exactly blame the hoarders. I'm a huge hoarder, but I tend to hoard one of everything. >.> I know that's bad too, but... pixels.
To be honest, I was more irked about the limited time QP items. Achievements can wait, but items that will soon be gone will not. :c I should have just hoarded my QPs.
Yesss raffle ticket. Thank you Subeta. :D
It's not really the fact that it's not "free" anymore that's bothering me, although I do agree it should be re-named to not confuse anyone. What's bothering me is what's already been addressed about refreshing when they first came out and getting basically an infinite amount of them and now there are users with 10k+ in shops selling them for about 4k a pop. let's see here.. 10,000 beers X 4000 = 40,000,000sP and that is just one shop. That, quite frankly, is a looooot of sP. I thought we were all for looking at sP sinks also? This doesn't seem to be helping. Yeah, free beer is goin' bye-bye, but the sP isn't getting deleted it's just being passed from player to player. Can't win for losing.
All I've learned about "don't hoard" is to hoard.

I'm really not trying to argue but really there are some stubborn users that hoard things and don't let them go. If people want to sit on a huge stack of free beers then they're going to. I'm pretty stubborn, myself, as I have a small hoard of like 1,000 anpans that I don't see myself letting go of. Even if someone offered to buy them for 1 million sp each. No. They're mine. :c
Same! I keep regretting not having a hoard of free beer though. I wish I would have gotten more when they came out, but I was a dunce and only got like 50 or something for free. Even if I would have just gotten 1,000 of them, not nearly as much as some people have, I would be happy because I wouldn't have to keep buying them from other users to complete achievements I could have completed for free if I could have seen into the future.
I hate to say this because technically it's subeta's fault for letting users take as many free beers as they wanted for a great period of time-- however, I really think what staff needs to do is literally delete every single free beer that's on subeta right now this second. Then re-release them as a one per day bit in the brewery's off season.
While 4k isn't breaking anyone's bank, it's punishing people who didn't autorefresh, and rewarding the users who set up autorefreshers for extended periods of time. And if such an oversight was abused irl-- let's say an ATM was accidentally giving people using it an extra $20 because of the machine's malfunction. Would those people who used said machine on that day get to keep the extra money? Hell no. Is it their fault for pocketing an extra $20+? No, it's the banks, but it's either take back the money or start charging everyone a $20 fee for using any branch ATM until they make up their losses.
Which is exactly what subeta is doing by this, and that isn't fair.
I say forcefully delete all the free beers and then bring them back once a day freebies due to their being items related to them now.
I completely agree with this tbh. I've personally thought the same, but never wanted to say because I knew people would be spitting mad. Andrea is a braver soul than I.
I hate to admit it but if this is possible it should be done ^

I've actually contemplated this too, to be honest.

I was pretty new to the site when they were last available and I didn't get many either, but I managed to grab loads from the donation corner later. Picking those up and hoarding them was definitely beneficial in the long run. I just think it odd that users who didn't hoard are expected to fix what other users broke.
Also agreeing with ! While a lot of users would kick up a fuss, it's almost certainly the best solution. No matter how many are left on site, you won't be able to get rid of people's hoards otherwise.
I've been holding onto my beers in the hopes they come up for the Recycle Beast one more time. I have just over 1k though, not tens of thousands or more. I didn't autorefresh for them so I got bored :P It's nice having them on hand for the things that come up that need them, but I have to say if they got deleted and came back as a once a day freebie, I wouldn't mind. Not that I want to lose out on 1k free potential RB points, but it's probably the best way to get rid of them.
And maybe then they could be made to come up regularly for the Recycle Beast just to make sure some of those continue to cycle back out of the economy and people don't build up hoards of them again over time
I can't say I know the consequences of having 5mil of an item on site, I assume there are some since staff is pushing so hard to get rid of them, but if free beers had no additional use, no additional value, then it wouldn't be this added problem everyone's complaining about. If someone chose to autorefresh and hoard of 30k free beers and no one bought them because they're useless, then that's on THEM. That's on them and they have thirty thousand useless items that they'll have to deal with and try to sell. But this is just the opposite. This is inadvertently rewarding what they've done. Because it's not very hard to sell free beers at all, with the achievements and whatnot.
I also agree with just deleting them. It's fuzzy to remember but isn't that what was done with elixirs when they were revalued or something?
Another vote for just deleting them all. Buying them up with SubetaTeam wouldn't help really as it would just introduce a mass influx of sp into the market. Maybe to take the sting off leave each user that had some with a single beer and for people who had over X amount give something special. Nothing super fancy but a token "Sorry for deleting 10k of your items" sorta thing.
That said I'm not sure how "Free Beer" is confusing to anyone honestly. That's just the name of the item. Free Pumpkin has the same sort of name. Granted that's meaning it's flying free, but still. One could assume this is a low quality beer that is give out for free at parties or whatever.

My memory isn't the best either, but I'm fairly certain that's exactly what happened.

All this fuss over an item that was free and it now 4k... Seems pretty ridiculous to me.
They do not need to be renamed. They were at one time free. Just because they are now only available via user shops for SP shouldn't warrant a name change. If anything, it would cause confusion among existing players ("What happened to my free beers?!?I had 3,000 and now I don't have any?!?!?")
And the suggestion that they all be deleted, when there ARE people that obtained theirs without using auto refreshers?! What is this, nazi Germany?! WORST IDEA EVER.
