I'm not threatened that people are listening to the previously marginalized. I am, however, worried that being a victim seems to be taking precedence over every other measure of worth, and that it's becoming a free-for-all debate of "no, I'm more oppressed, I deserve the special consideration." With men versus women, it really is kind of a close call in my book who's got it rougher, but the respective deals won't get any sweeter if the Battle of the Sexes gets all Yugoslavian. (Though, given the whole thing where most people are heterosexual, bloodshed isn't as likely as it is for the other Races to Second Class.)
That's just it, though. The oppressed have MORE appeal to the masses, not less. People don't say "listen to him because he's Baron Von Monocle and his family has been fabulously wealthy for five generations." Quite the opposite, really: Kerry and Romney seem to have lost their races largely because they were upper-class and acted like it.
