She was given to the boy as an Easter present. The bright-eyed baby bunny was his delight, always eager for treats given when he came home from school. He would tell her stories about what he'd learned in class, his favorite school lunches and the best parts of recess. They spent long summer days playing in the yard together. She loved hide and seek and always hid in Mother's flower bed. Somehow, he always managed to find her, but she didn't mind. They would sit together on the back porch, sharing a bag of baby carrots and watching the sun set.

The boy began to grow up fast. Instead of library books, he brought home sports equipment. The sweet, woodsy smell of pencil shavings was replaced by the pungent odor of sweat. Some days practice would run late and Mother would come to give her the little brown pellets and clean her cage. Mother was kind but distant. She'd never much been one for pets.

Change came again when the boy began to bring girls home. His timing was strategic, always carefully planned while Mother was still at work. These flower-smelling girls were always eager to pet her. She quite liked the cloud of flowers that floated around them like clouds.

She did not like the smell of metal when the boy got his first car. For his part, the young man was rather tired of what a chore it was to clean every corner of the hutch. Besides, he would be going away to college in the fall and pets weren't allowed.

He wasn't a cruel person. Two minutes in the local pet store convinced him that his once-favored pet would be unhappy there. He was the youngest person left in his neighborhood and while he wished there was some child who could love his little pal as he once had, he wasn't taking the chance on a newspaper ad. What if the person who adopted her was secretly a mad scientist or something?

There was a lookout point a few miles outside of town at the edge of a massive forest. He'd seen quite a few wild rabbits frolicking when he was there with his now-steady girlfriend. His little pal would have plenty of pals of her own.

He drove her to the forest on the first day of his final summer vacation. The wildflowers were in full bloom and the weather couldn't be finer. She bounded into the tall grass, looking back only once. He raised a hand and waved. She wiggled her ears, a final salute.

Several local residents crept out of their hiding spots, interested in this new arrival. She had the silkiest fur they had ever seen and her paws were clever. Free of human restrictions, she could finally let the creative spirit residing within her take flight.

For each of her new friends, she created a crown of flowers in their favorite colors. They wore these proudly, showing her all the best hiding spots and grazing places in return.

They also told her a secret that only rabbits know. The dew of the wildflowers, blessed long ago by a goddess of the woods, was a sort of elixir of life that would keep a wise and wary bunny forever young if they stayed within the circle. It was a place where predators did not stray, a place where cruel winter and harsh weather never reached. A haven for creatures who so often had to face frightful dangers of all kinds.

Her time among the humans had given her many good things but it was here, surrounded by flowers and among her own kind, where she felt she truly belonged.
