I believe the original artist said it's female. I've even seen her larger pic of this minion on NeoColours.
The gender is meant to be a kind of ambiguous. Makes for better customization that way. Personally, I think of it as female.

I didn't mention before, by the artwork itself is very beautiful. This pixel is very sad, and I actually fee la little sorry for it. I may collect quite a few.
Looks like some people need to grab an anatomy book or stare at a real female's back. Girls that aren't anorexic tend to have a nice back like that that doesn't show a full on spine.
