Stay Safe: Internet Security Reminder

It’s been a while since we’ve done any sort of security reminder, so we thought it was best to do one now with the increase of users online!

We strongly suggest you keep your password different for every site you sign up for. There are various applications out there that will help you keep track of multiple passwords, so you aren’t risking yourself using the same one everywhere! It’s a good idea to change your passwords regularly instead of keeping the same for years on end. If you haven’t changed your Subeta one in a while, now is a good time to do so.

If you are worried one of your accounts across the internet has been hacked, check out a site like https://haveibeenpwned.com/.

Stay safe and be smart on the internet. <3

Now that I think about it I don't know if I've my password since I joined Subeta. But that was only uh....eleven...eleven years ago?? Maybe it's time for a change lmao.

(if a second incomplete post from me pops up - my bad - somehow i sent it before i was finished???)

I think this is also a decent site to use!

https://www.security.org/how-secure-is-my-password

Also, I've been using Bitwarden as a password manager for a while now, and I assumed I had already changed my password here to something stronger, but apparently not! So, thanks for the reminder, even though the site I linked still said that my old password wouldn't be cracked by a single computer for 2 million years. 😎

I don't really recommend password keeper apps, because they're themselves potentially vulnerable and also can lose all your passwords at once if they fail.

Your browser can remember the passwords for you that you don't need to keep super secret. This includes most web games :)

Choose a very secure password that you can remember - write it down somewhere and put it for safe keeping where a trusted family member can access it in case you are disabled, potentially a safe or the like, and don't write on it what it's a password to so if someone did find it... they don't know what it's for. Use that for your email that can be used to recover passwords for other stuff. change this password regularly; keep it 6 months to a year at most

Use a separate secure and memorable password for each banking (credit card account, savings account, checking account, loans) or payment-enabled app (like paypal) that you use. (this can also go for online stores that you allow to save your payment info). Store those somewhere you consider secure and also enable two-factor security with a dongle or a cell phone app. (If you use a cell phone app, be sure you use an email that is not connected to that cell phone for that app!) Have the site send you a verification every time you do something that costs/pays money! These don't need to be changed, as long as you have that second factor, unless you lose your dongle or cell phone...

Most sites, even if their servers are hacked, will not reveal your password. That's because a properly programmed web server doesn't store users' passwords at all; it stores a hash of the passwords, a one way type of encryption that can't be decrypted even if you know the 'secret' used for the encryption.

However, a client side hack could steal your password by fooling you into sending it to the wrong place.

That website isn't really helpful since almost everything that came up "pwned" was hacked at some point in the last 10-15 years with data breaches.

I have a million passwords. IT related, they force a change every 70 days. Mobile service, every 6mths I believe. Now other services I pay for are doing similar things. I write down my passwords and my little book never leaves my house. Password managers are great if you're always going to carry around a thumb drive (usb drive), keep it encrypted and know how to access your encryption key. It wasn't ideal for me.
Passwords aren't as easy to crack as a lot of people would like to believe. It's a matter of how simple so many people make their passwords that make them more vulnerable. Make a strong and long password and you have a much higher chance of never having it broken. (Being "hacked" is different, to a degree.)

I recommend 1Password, I use it myself for work and personal use. It is a really great tool and I found it better than the competitors.

Great reminder, thank you staff for looking out for everyone.

The discord is usually pretty quiet, but occasionally has posted a small preview of what's being worked on or asked for people online to test something real quick. So if you like keeping up with that kind of stuff, I'd say it's worth joining. :)

Just in case you guys forgot where your password is located: Hover the "personal" tab on the menu bar. Select Dashboard. Click Password at the top.

You also might want to make sure that your subeta email is up to date too: Hover the "personal" tab on the menu bar. Select Dashboard. Click Profile at the top. Your email is on that page!
