Not So Friendly Challenger: Vanya

Oh, excuse me! Hi! I’ve been trying to get the attention of anybody headed up to Arctic Frost. I’d like someone to check on my father, actually.

Pop seemed fine when we all visited for Luminaire, but some of his customers have told me he’s been acting strange lately. Irritable, holing up in his workshop for days on end, not responding to visitors, that sort of thing. Someone said he literally threw people out, grabbed them by the belt and tossed them out the door! He’s certainly spry for his age, but that seems outlandish to me. Still, I’m worried and I can’t seem to reach him.

It would mean so much to me if you could find out what’s going on!

Anyway, twelve possessed characters might be...a little much, so I hope that we see other aspects of paranormal activity :)

Honestly, I can see that too. Maleria's supposedly been plotting something for all these years, maybe this year, she'll make her move. Subeta isn't afraid of making drastic changes, and I'd like to see Maleria try something and show us why she shouldn't be underestimated. And maybe she's tinting her magic a different color so she's less suspected, although I do see a little bit of purple. Idk, it's a stretch, but she's the most likely culprit.

Aside from her, I can't think of anyone besides Merena who would have blue-tinted magic. But Merena already achieved her goal, she got her freedom, I don't see how possessing random people would further a goal of hers... unless it's a goal we've yet to discover. Idk, we'll just have to wait and see!

I'm excited too! This is really different from the past three years, first, it was fighting people based on triggering their fears, then it was friendly challengers, then it was Blake, and now... people are being controlled against their will. It raises the stakes because an outside force is making them do these things. Yeah, all of them should go get some of that tea afterwards. I'm both excited and scared to see whose gonna be next...

A funny thing, I actually did think a possible yearly challenger theme could be Maleria mind-controlling NPCs with her Dark Matter or whatever. But those eyes are blue, so it doens't seem like a dark matter thing. It oculd be Merana, because Hydrus pets have blue eyes, don't they? But I guess we'll find out when the Cash Shop challenger is revealed.

And yes, I'm excited to see victims too. I really love the trope where someone is mind-controlled or possessed and needs saving. Just as long as they're alright in the end. They should all have some .

!!! OOh, a possession challenger thing? I'm excited to see where this goes from here and who the other 11 victims will be...

But who is behind this... Maybe it's Maleria's doing? Or Mori's? Merena seems a bit too implausible to cast a spell on him. First, I don't think she'd want to risk freezing in the Arctic Frost just to possess Vanya. Second... I think she'd need to be closer to him in order to cast it.

But I'm just theorizing here. I'm excited and I really hope that this becomes a plot later, or these challenges are the set up for a plot. I can't remember the last time we had one...

I can't help but think that this would have been a great chance to drag this whole possession thing out until Morostide. and then end it with a plot/event to solve the mystery. Could have been a lot of fun :(

My guess is that the explanation for the possession will probably come with whatever the Cash Shop challenger is later, since those tend to be connected (at least in recent years). I also can't wait to see what exactly the theme for this year will be and if it will involve NPCs all over Subeta and all that. :)

Is it going to be different NPCs again or will it be him all year?

Okay well I didn't get a notification when I was refreshing...but I did find Possessed Vanya under my Secret opponents even when it didn't tell me...so if like me you were refreshing and getting nothing check your secret challengers for him :D

That text is always there. The instructions he's talking about are instructions to make Nostalgic color pets, items which are part of a quest you have to do for him if you want a Nostalgic pet.

Putting the rest under spoilers so people don't scream at me

It's not necessary to do one of those quests to get him as a challenger. (so keep your money, y'all) I'm 95 percent sure Luck is correct, that all you need to do is refresh at his workshop. I didn't refresh exactly, but I did leave and come back - though I guess that basically amounts to the same thing - and got him on the second try.

Nice challenger! , if only it was a plot, then we could call in the SAI and see Jack Cardale, since they're right there on the same continent, but it's fun for what it is :)
