I'm wondering what makes these lil xotls so tempting in the first place- Maybe xotls taste like skittles and people don't even realize they're a hallucinogen, they just want to see which xotl is which flavor. Is a dusk xotl blue raspberry? :D
Perhaps the toxins can be put to good use, since both toads and the dart frogs' toxins have potential medicinal usefulness irl. So they don't want to remove the poison totally... maybe breeders actively feed their xotls the poisonous insects as a diet, in order to study the toxin's compounds. And the bitter thing is kind of an after-the-thought thing to try and convince people they're concerned about fools who lick extremely deadly frogs.

I have to agree with you there... breeding out the toxins would make more sense... or even finding out what causes the toxins. I know in the real life dart frogs, where the xotl is derived from, (also known as Dendrobatidae), the toxicity is from their native prey: ants, beetles, and termites (which have eaten plants that have toxins.) That said, in captivity, Dendrobatids are fed meals of fruit flies, which do not contain these toxins, thus rendering the dendrobatids harmless. :) You can even take wild-caught Dendrobatids and feed them on fruit flies, and they lose the toxicity. I believe it varies per sub-species, with some losing toxicity in the span of a few weeks, and others taking years to do so. :)
