Yes it is called a Humuhumunukunukuapua'a... Those who don't know how to pronounce it, it is HOO-moo-HOO-moo-NOO-koo-NOO-koo-AH-poo-AH-ah. My dad used to catch these off of coconut bay in Hilo, but every fish he caught he threw back. It's considered an insult to take the fish that are native to the land, the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a... but!!! There has been a lot of contention between ichthyologists in Hawaii of if this fish should remain "on the throne" or not... humuhumu, they call it for short, still sits on the throne because of its ancient ties with the history of the islands. And if you were ever to catch one, along with the papio, toss it back. Don't keep it, don't cook it, no matter how much you are starving. If you do, this is an insult to the island, its heritage, its natives and the natives of long ago. Islanders are very big in their culture and the ancient traditions and superstitions and still abide by them these days. The youth, not so much. People can go island fever real easily cuz face it, there isn't much to do there. No Disneyland resorts, no fancy shmancy fun parks, perhaps maybe a small carnival once and a while, but the islands mainly serve the purpose of tradition AND tourists. Those who love their island, they love the tradition, the foods, that's why there's such an obese epidemic over there unfortunately, but they do tend to celebrate their traditions through good food, hula dancing and torch performers and fire breathers, and sacred, or kapu. If you ever get the chance to go, I highly recommend the big island. Go to Waimea valley - oh my God. If I could travel through Waimea valley again, I'd do so all day long. It's the most gorgeous scenery, and the rainbows never end, because the bad weather tend to accumulate off to the right of the big island because of Maunaloa, mauka, is too big to allow the clouds to pass through to the left of the island and dissipate. Don't miss out on Kona, but you got to catch it on a warm sunny day for it tends to be overcast at times and you don't get to experience the clear blue waters as much, visually speaking. So stay makai and you'll be fine. And if you go south to the volcanic national park, the sands turn black and you can find flecks of peridot in the sand. Too small to do anything with, so really something to marvel at instead. My family had been natives for quite some time. Even tho white people are referred as Haole's, our history runs deep there still. My sister now resides there, that beyotch. LOVE YOU MEES! She teaches hot yoga and man the positions she can contort herself into! I love her, but we tend to see things through different perspectives... but still... I love her. So stay away from the pakalolo LOLOL!!! Ohana to everyone that lives there and and to you when you visit. And akamai to your pet profile. Pa'ipunahele to your works as well... mahalo and aloha!
