It's a bird shooting rainbows out of it's body. Does the direction they're going really have to make much sense?

Maybe it's doing a counter-clockwise barrel roll. That makes the rainbow make sense.

Actually, if you picture the lain doing a sort of corkscrew spiral, that trail looks like its in the perfect position to me. 
Okay SERIOUSLY people, does no one realize that the rainbow is totally out of position on this pet color?? He's obviously doing a sort of backflip, and yet the rainbow is "trailing" the other direction off his wing. This would be STUNNING if it weren't for that irritating little mistake _!!
Still waiting for the Blacklight Telenine!! Ravin' is dying for it! ((although the Spectrum Telenine needs to be rehauled first, it's too casual right now))
