Excerpt from the history books of Dannides II, Professor at the United Islet's Captain School.
Dannides I was born to a land-dwelling mother and a father from the Eastern Islets. By default, upon turning nineteen he was made to join the United Eastern Islet Defence Force, commonly referred to as Salvagers by the dwellers of the Western Islets. The king in the East, Anton IV, had inherited the throne from his late psychotic father, and had promised to make the Eastern Islets the more prosperous of the two and thereby proclaim its superiority.
Anton had also planned to reform the Defence Force, and as part of his plan implemented the 19th Year Recruitment Plan, in which all nineteen year-old men of adequate health were immediately drafted to become parts of the airship armies. Two thousand men who excelled at flying the airships were selected to be enrolled in the prestigious Captain's School, in which they gained the credentials to control their own fleets. Dann's adeptness for flying and his intellectual superiority propelled him through the Captain's School more quickly than his peers, and he became the first to control his own fleet, the First Regiment. He was in charge of 40 ships, each manned by 30 crew members, and his ships were the first to begin the patrols around the Eastern border, dropping Western ships and incurring the anger of the King in the West.
Thus marked the beginning of the Islet War. The king in the West, Enoch II, began to reform his airship fleets, which were referred to as the Raiders. The Western Islets being more prosperous throughout history, Enoch II had more resources with which to upgrade his airships. He commissioned Architects to design a new style of airships, longer and faster than the heavy Eastern design. These would become known as Western Airships, which were quicker, lighter, but also longer and more prone to being shot down with a smaller amount of cannons. The quickness of the Western Airships gave them an advantage over the Eastern ones, and for a period of three years the Western Islets had a military advantage over the Eastern Islets, and people began to evacuate the Eastern Islets in favor of the dangerous land on the ground, which had been abandoned hundreds of years prior.
While on the ground, the Eastern Isleters had discovered a way to tame the aeronautic, serpent-like creatures that inhabited the land. These creatures were on average 25 feet long and had a wingspan of 45 feet. The Easterners found that the beasts could be domesticated and used as military weapons; they also found that the glands behind their tongues secreted fire. Dann's mother had been a chief proponent in domesticating these creatures, being land-born to a family that had experience with encountering them. Dann had a natural-born talent for domesticating and riding these creatures, which the Easterners branded "Eastern Serpents." He thus led the Salvaging missions against Raiders both in his airship and on the Eastern Serpents.
The Serpents proved to be a deciding factor for the outcome of the war, giving the Eastern Islets a much-needed advantage. Enoch II fell ill for the last two years of the war and was replaced by his temperamental, rash son, Mendentes I. For the remainder of the war, the Western Islets suffered from internal turmoil and strife, with multiple rebellions splitting the region into factions ruled by warlords. Mendentes I was soon usurped by a warlord from Aevid's Hook, who persecuted the land-dwellers underneath the Western Islets.
As violence in the Western Islets escalated, with individual islets warring against each other, Dannides I, with the counsel of his land-born mother, proceeded to overthrow the warlord who had usurped Mendentes I. In doing so, he put an end to the warring period and united the Western and Eastern Islets. He called the new union the United Islets and executed the warlords who refused to swear allegiance to him.
