It was a bright sunny morning on the farm and the roosters were crowing. Appleseed woke up, shaking the hay off of his side as he stood up. He went to the stall door and tried to look over it. He could just barely see over the railing, he was still a foal and a pony to boot. With his nose in the air, he could smell the fresh breeze flit through the barn doors as they opened. He could hear familiar voices saying good morning to all the animals in the barn. His momma gave an impatient stamp of her hoof. She nickered at him and nosed a piece of hay out of his forelock. They could hear the farm hands and volunteers getting the feed ready for everyone and opening doors, letting the animals out into the pastures.
They lived on a very special farm that took in all sorts of animals and had fields filled with fresh veggies and fruits. Appleseed could smell the yummy food but could never get to them no matter how hard he tried. The farm was also open to visitors almost daily who would pet and feed them. Appleseed liked the small humans the best, they always had something tasty hidden on them.
Appleseed caught a familiar scent and a few moments later one of the caretakers came into the stall with a halter. She gave them pets and as they walked out he followed close to his momma's side, looking around to see who was joining them. As they walked out of the barn he gave a high pitched whinny to the chickens who were already eating their feed. Today they went to the small field behind the barn. As they entered he kicked up his heels and sprang forward to do a happy little run.
The goats were already out and playing so Appleseed joined them, butting heads and chasing them until he was too tired to run anymore. He lay out in the soft grass and let the warm sunshine wash over him. A couple of the goats, a chicken and a calf came and lay down next to him. Here he was always surrounded by friends. Soon the doors would open and the people would come in to pet them, give them scratches, and forfeit their delicious treats. Every day was a good day for little Appleseed. One of the chickens had brought her fluffy little chicks with her. A few of them jumped onto Appleseed and he snuffled their poofy feathers, snorting and smiling when they tickled his nose. Their tiny little chirps were so funny to him. The calf at his side stretched out and gave out a contented sigh.
He could hear the low, gentle sound of mooing coming from the front of the farm. Dottie the dog and Carter the cat ran by, both running towards the sound of food bowls being filled. He had lots of friends of all kinds, including: cats, dogs, pigs, alpacas, goats, chickens, tortoises, ponies, sheep, and a big bird that liked to run around shrieking every time it caught a glimpse of anyone carrying food. There were also big brown birds that followed each other around, even in circles, and made lots of noise but they got to come and go as they pleased. The sheep and alpacas confused him though. Every so often one would get rounded up into the barn and then come out looking completely different and much, much smaller. Very suspicious. His momma promised him that it could never happen to them but he had his doubts.
Nearby he could see as more of his friends were let out into the pasture next to his, including his best friend Sunflower. (Sunflower liked to snuggle the fluffy sheep during naptime but Appleseed wasn't going to risk it. Nope.) Mostly they liked racing each other, even across the fence. Little Appleseed loved stretching his legs. Even if they didn't always go how he wanted them to he was getting better at running every day. Very gently Appleseed nudged the sleepy chicks from his shoulder and stood up. He stretched and yawned, watching as a lazy bee drifted by searching for flowers.
He heard a small neigh and looked towards the sound, Sunflower was at the fence to say hello. He trotted over and they gave one another a good sniff and huff. Both of their ears turned towards the entrance to the farm, happy high pitched laughter was coming their way! The treats were here! Both the colts danced with happiness. Prancing towards the gate they stood patiently awaiting the first guests, ready to show them just how much fun a farm sanctuary could be.
