Welcome to the Circus. My name is Vera, but around here I'm known as the Painted Lady. I can show you around, if you like.
Things around here aren't always what they seem. Curious to know more? Come join me in my tent.
The ringmaster here is named Montgomery. He's not a bad guy. He took me in off the streets, fed me, clothed me, gave me a job. When he offered to let me join the Circus, I thought he would have me riding a penny farthing around the ring. Turns out he had something else in mind.
Curious about the tattoos yet? Most people are when they first notice them changing. Montgomery said he would make me a painted lady. I figured he meant getting normal ink, like the sailors do. It's unusual for a proper lady to have them, but the tattoos he inked on me were beyond unusual. They moved and changed, and took on a life of their own. I was surprised, to say the least.
A painted lady, Montgomery explained to me, is a type of butterfly. I was a caterpillar before I came to the circus, and he transformed me into what I am now. I suppose your next question might be, how? Or why? He keeps the how close to his chest, but over the years I've come to understand the why.
Every so often, Montgomery will have me pose for him. He'll paint me, or just sketch whatever the tattoos are showing him. They usually depict scenes from our circus, familiar people and places. Sometimes just butterflies from head to toe. But occasionally, they'll show things that haven't happened yet. Things that will happen. Things that in the end, always happen.
My tattoos tell the past, the present, and the future. It's a secret Montgomery doesn't want getting around, but you won't tell a soul, right? I should mention, the tattoos will show if you do. Years ago, rumors were that in every new town we rolled into, a few people went missing. Some joined the Circus, like I did. Others? Who knows.
