This book hooked me. I don't even normally read the sci-fi genre but I was INVESTED immediately.
This is my first book read by this author, so I plan to read more of his books now! But the way he writes is just so good. There's humour sprinkled in, along with the fact that he's obviously aware that not everybody has a super deep scientific education, so he makes it easier to understand. I loved this about the book - he uses metaphors/similes to describe science where it requires a slightly deeper understanding for the sake of following along with the plot. The book is written all from the point of view of one character, yet the author manages to make it so engaging.
I finished this book in two days, reading hours at a time. It is also a movie (which I think is still currently running in cinemas) but I'd strongly advise reading the book first, from what I've seen. I made a conscious effort not to look it up at all until I'd finished the book and let's just say that even the movie trailer kinda spoils some of the intrigue of the plot.
Anyway, anyone else read this and wanna discuss?
"Amaze amaze amaze!"
Haven't read it but somehow this is the SECOND time today this book has come up on two different sites. And the first site pointed out the pun of the character Ryland Grace. Because Hail Mary, full of Grace.
It might be fate ;)
Yeah, I noticed that too (quite a bit of the way into reading the book, admittedly)! It's interesting because not every language has a saying like 'hail mary' in that context, so they had to call the film title something different in some regions. In Brazil for example, it's called 'Devoradores de Estrelas' ('Star Devourers').
I liked it! But I also had already read The Martian, so Project Hail Mary felt a little Andy-Weir-formulaic to me. I think in my review I described it as: "Smart guy needs to use SCIENCE to get out of a life-threatening (space) pickle. He is funny. And American. And white." I don't want to get into spoilers but there was also a specific point about the big exciting reveal mid-way through the book that really annoyed me. I think I gave The Martian 5 stars, and PHM got 3.75 from me. (I think Artemis is on my to-read list, but it's not high and I haven't heard great things about it.)
I like the Brazilian name but also feels a little spoiler-y! But I don't even like to read book blurbs before reading a book so my definition of a 'spoiler' might be a little different from others'.
