Hey everyone! Here's a quick overview of the new pet profile system.

Try It Out

Visit any of your pets and click the edit button, or go directly to the profile editor and select "edit profile" from the selection dropdown. I KNOW I NEED TO MAKE THIS MORE CLEAR!!!

image

Two Viewing Modes

You can switch between two views:

  1. Legacy View - Pulls in your existing CSS and customization. This isn't perfect yet - I'd love to see examples where it isn't working well! If your old profile looks broken, please share screenshots or links here.

  2. New Block View - Lets you use draggable blocks to build your profile, similar to user profiles. The idea is to make it really easy to build on these blocks over time.

Custom Styling

You can also add custom styles with CSS! This works in both views, so you can still make your pet's profile uniquely yours.

What's Next

I want to keep adding more block types and options based on your feedback. Let me know what blocks you'd like to see, what's confusing, or what's not working right!

this is a big one! Please take a look at this system, I know I haven't documented it super well here but there is a legacy view and you can make sure that is what users see when they click on your profile on Kumos.

You can work on the new, cool V2 version while that is what you display to people who visit. Making any changes to your profile does not change your position in the spotlight while this is testing. Thank you!!

I'm able to add sections like books read, food eaten, battle stats, and such, but they all go to the middle column and I can't move them to the left or right columns. I would love to make the scrolling less for my pet pages.

Same thing happend to me. The instructions say that we can drag and drop the blocks into whatever column we want. When I try, all I get is a BIG error notification. All of my blocks are going into Column One, so everything looks uneven. :(

My pet image is broken:

https://kumos.subeta.net/pet/5891410?preview=v2

it's this: https://img.subeta.net/pets/zentu_day which has this

error message 404 Not Found Code: NoSuchKey Message: The specified key does not exist. Key: pets/zentu_day RequestId: CPQW1MATXSEYCR27 HostId: fg/NhAcBS47jOCWE473TBvec19W2+xFglJAa12lizoAEs18DKn7x3Wel9jnncDuEC+XUCf17r7I= An Error Occurred While Attempting to Retrieve a Custom Error Document Code: NoSuchKey Message: The specified key does not exist. Key: error.html

Arrow keys show up but don't let me actually move any of the sections.

For another pet, I tried setting CSS as your example but it's not showing the colors

Initial thoughts on default v2 profiles:

I don't see the pet like button... Am I missing it or is it not there?

I think the books read/food eaten should be separated. I feel like a lot of us have pets with different 'roles' so it feels a bit like... like they're just together because they had always been next to each other in the list, you know?

And I have some thoughts that are just about the appearance of the default v2 pet profile layout, idk if you're looking for feedback on that but I am, apparently, very opinionated lmao sorry. I like the treasure item names being visible by default. But I don't really like the way pet treasures display with so many items per row that the name is partly cut off and needs to be hovered over on what feels like 90% of the items... I guess with CSS I can change that but it just looks kind of awkward to me? (tangent: In general I wish we could have the item names on hover disabled, like be able to toggle between the names on hover or the names displaying under the item or something? It's one of my little pet peeves with legacy profiles, because the way the hover is done makes it impossible to disable wihout disabling hover effects in general, unless I'm just missing something. It really isn't that big a deal but I like having the item names display under the image and it feels super redundant to also have them display on hover.)

I feel like the pet minion being scaled up makes it awkwardly blurry and kinda detracts from the art for half my pets' minions x:

Attempting to edit pet profile:

  • I can add new sections but I can't actually move anything.
  • Hitting 'cancel' or the X on the edit content block pop-up seems to do nothing. It only closes if I hit 'save block'.
  • I tried to add customCSS to edit some things that go against my preferred aesthetic but it looks like custom CSS isn't working on pet profiles yet?
  • I tried to edit the 'about' section and once I switched to HTML instead of markdown, I started getting this error when I tried to hit the v2 preview. https://i.imgur.com/85DjehI.png

I'll go through some of my pet profiles and find out what ones display weird on legacy mode later. I remember already tweaking a couple to make them display better, when there was last talk about v2 pet profiles and 'legacy' mode.

Is it possible to have more obvious links to the current profile somewhere? I might be blind (I just got off work and immediately went to this so I am pretty tired lol) but I can't find a link to the legacy profile page outside of the 'preview' button.

edit: also want to say that, while my post does not at all get this across, I am doing my best to be optimistic about v2 profiles! I can think of at least one layout that I think will be easier to customize the way I want it on v2 profiles, and I'm looking forward to when things are working as they should so that I'll be able to start on making a new version of that + generally playing around with the new profiles and seeing what we can do with 'em!

I've tried moving the blocks - I get the 4-way cursor appear, but the blocks aren't draggable (using a regular PC with Chrome 143.0.7499.170)

I've tried the customCSS section, using the 'available variables' listed: .pet-profile-v2 { --pet-bg-color: ; --pet-text-color: !important; --pet-border-color: ; --pet-heading-color: ; --pet-card-bg: ; } But that doesn't change anything at all

Treasure - Item names visibility, maybe have a toggle in the edit area to show or hide item name.

Friends - Not a bit pet friends user myself. Not a big fan of the link including the image, name, and text. Maybe the pet name but not everything.

Maybe split-up pet name from owner/species and adoption?

Also encountered the issues with moving blocks and viewing the profile if markdown is used. Also notices that spoiler was not working on legacy view.

Very excited, have a bunch of ideas I've been kicking around in my head for an updated pet profile.

Okay, so I have begun messing with the new pet profiles in the ways I currently can (which mostly amounts to using Stylus, haha).

Firstly, I forgot to say that I really appreciate full canvas mode! It's nice to not have to 'reset' the layout with CSS. I am also so very, very happy about spotlight being separate from the pet info at last.

Is it possible for the data blocks to be given their own unique IDs like on the legacy user profiles? Each block on legacy user profiles has a class, ID with unique numbers, and then the data id.

The reason I ask this is because of a limitation to CSS we're able to have onsite. On my user profile, if I'm trying to target the 'blank section' that has a dumb text emoji... while '[data-id="9126966"]{background: pink}' should work and does work when I use the Stylus extension to live-preview CSS, it does not work when I actually put it on my user profile. But if I target the unique ID of that block and use '#column1_9126966{background: pink}' instead, it works fine with on-site CSS.

It's like how I am able to import CSS code to target individual TC items by item name rather than treasure chest number. If I import this CSS from elsewhere, it works, but if it is directly on the pet profile, it doesn't work: .treasure_item:has(img[title="Gold Guitar Pick"]){background: hotpink}

I'm only a casual when it comes to coding (the knowledge I have is tied entirely to pet profiles here, lol) so I assume there's a reason that those don't work. So, uh, having unique IDs to target would be really great!

Here's a first round of feedbacks/impressions on the new pet profiles!

What I like in general:

  • I love that we can now freely more around and remove blocks. There's a lot of blocks I never use on my pets profiles, like minion and friends, so being able to just remove them from the start is great!
  • I actually like the modules, they remind me of user profiles on legacy. One thing I always hated on legacy when making profiles was having to carefully move around everything with CSS just to get say, the TC to be next to the description.
  • Really appreciating the full canvas mode and being able to have a full page profile without needing to add a reset code in the CSS

General comments:

  • Will the ability to upload images directly on a profile remain? I feel like this is a nice feature and would make adding images to profile slightly more accessible for the average user, but it's not a must have feature and it's probably not the best use of Subeta's server space and bandwidth to allow direct image upload on site.
  • I will echo Lea and say that I'd love to see a toggle for TC items names.

Ideas and wishlist: Since you said there's a lot you can code, I'm going to suggest a ton of 'would be nice' things that might or might not be possible.

I'd love the ability to do basic customization without custom CSS. Things like:

  • Changing the alignement (left, center, right) of the elements in some blocks like the pet image, pet information etc
  • Changing the fonts for various elements of the page like the headers and body text (maybe with google fonts integration or a preselection of fonts)
  • Changing the general colors of the whole page. Maybe there could even be a few pre-made themes? Could be themed around the base pets colors too.
  • Changing the width of columns so that we can make column one the larger one.
  • Custom background: you put in the URL, and select the alignment (center, repeat etc.) in a dropdown menu.

Basically, how doable would it be to give us a basic 'customize' page with some options without needing custom CSS? I can code CSS, a ton of users can, but I feel like this could make pets profile more accessible to a newer generation and more users. It could even just be a page that generates a very basic custom CSS after you select all the settings you want. This same basic customization could probably be used on the user profile page too.

Other ideas:

  • Custom CSS gallery for pets profiles so that profile makers can more easily share their creation. A bit like we have for the site Custom CSS

Going to get some of these things in this week, thank you so much for this feedback πŸ™

.... omg. I know that pet profile CSS is wild but that is all ... a lot! i'd love to be able to give you WAY BETTER selectors to go off of, so that you don't need to do any of that. maybe it'd be best if you could give me a copy of one of your pets more complex CSS where you're doing a ton of those types of selectors, and I can work backwards from how to make that way, way, easier on the Kumos profiles

echoing that i can't move any of the blocks :( also clicking "view profile" on the pets overview page always returns "no input file specified" whether you have the v2 or legacy option selected (but "return to profile" from the editing page displays properly)

the profiles themselves look really snazzy though!! i'm a fan of the blocks conceptually and i really like that you can choose which version of the profile to display, that is very very nice!! ^_^

Haha, okay, so to be fair a lot of the intention of that post was just me wanting to make it clear that I know you can target things by attribute, but from personal experience it's so convoluted to do on here that it's annoying.. and also definitely not something I can see a lot of people having the patience for lol. So it was just me trying to emphasize that unique IDs for each block would make a huge difference.

The only thing I've ever used that kind of convoluted targeting for is pet treasure chests. The legacy site does have numbered treasure chest div classes, which makes things easier, with the downside that you usually have to go through and update everything if you add new TC items or rearrange them. You have to always remember to view source and check the TC item numbers (or I guess count if you're brave enough).

For the CSS thing... this is the pet, for reference. https://subeta.net/petinfo.php?petid=5996312

And the CSS related to what I was yapping about: https://controlc.com/909d2466

The convoluted CSS here is why whenever the topic of 'new things for new pet profiles :)' came up I would start begging for an update to treasure chests haha. I don't do anything too fancy with treasure chests design-wise, I just really like the visual of big TCs being broken up a bit for organization.

Having the TC item divs be numbered again on Kumos would be helpful. The only other thing I can think of for this particular me-specific issue is if it would be somehow possible for items to have custom classes that are, like, automatically created based off item names? But some people have duplicate TC items, so idk.

Anyway, no rush since I know you have a million things to do, but I'm definitely looking forward to when you've got time to work on v2 pet profiles. I have a profile ready for as soon as things are cooperating, and I'm excited to start doing more 'u'

I've been wondering lately, once Legacy is gone would that mean the "Legacy View" is also gone? With what I can pick up from the conversation relating to Lea's comments the base code is going to be different enough that the old CSS we use on legacy to customize our pet pages won't work. Does this mean once Legacy is gone we'll have to re-do all out pet pages?

My understanding is that Legacy view is a feature of the new pet profile system, not something that will be going away with the rest of the legacy site. Legacy view is intended as a way for us to keep our old pet profiles rather than having to redo everything, since so many of us have tons of pet profiles that we've put a lot into. I believe the intention is that we should still be able to make some degree of changes to legacy profiles, but I'm not 100% sure on that - it's just the impression I've gotten based on what Keith has said.

New pet profiles are pretty dramatically different, but the HTML is a lot more organized and the modules are a game-changer (or they will be, once things work haha). From what I've seen, the only things that are more confusing are the TC item names, which have been pointed out, and I guess it's also more convoluted to do an 'unofficial' overlay (but still very doable! You just have to use the same CSS as you'd use for a minion overlay, since you're replacing an image rather than a div background.) Once these new profiles are working properly, I honestly think they'll be less confusing to learn than legacy profiles were (but it won't seem that way since we're all used to legacy pet profiles :P)

I’m late to looking at this because I hate anything block-based. It’s good for others i guess. I just want to make sure the work I’ve done on my pet pages isn’t going to be erased. So, in looking I noticed spoiler boxes do not seem to work. I use them heavily. Is there something I can add to code to fix this?

I also hope the item names don’t become required in TC. I hate it. If others like it, I get it. But I prefer not seeing that visual clutter.

I doubt I use V2 at all; I donβ€˜t like the limitations of blocks, but I hope I can continue writing pages in CSS.

overall, I 100% understand the need for Kumos, but I am feeling like what I love about Subeta is somewhat slipping from me. I’m still hopeful, but worried. I want to work on my pet pages, but I’ve been scared that I’m wasting my time. I guess I’ll just keep working on them how I like and hope for the best.
