Intro!
Forgive me if this needs to go in another location. This thread is for posting updates and comments from staff, especially , that are relevant to the updates and progress of Subeta, which are only posted on discord.

🔥The discord is here!🔥 It is public and linked at the bottom of every page. Everyone is free to join and look up all of these screenshots and more. You can use the search bar on discord and search for keith's username to filter by his posts. (Thanks for letting me know about this useful feature.)

But some users are unable or unwilling to join discord, and the discord does not have a special channel for updates, they're just shared in the general chat. So the purpose of this thread is to post updates in a place that's 1) accessible on-site to all Subeta players, and 2) in a single designated, easy-to-browse space.

All screenshots are followed by a text transcript of what is said in the screenshot. So if images are blocked or you're using a screenreader, you shouldn't be missing out on any info except the specific timestamps, and Keith's chibi discord icon.

stuff to keep in mind

  1. Do not discuss the updates here! This thread should be only for updates so it's easy for people to search the thread or subscribe so they can get an alert for new posts. If you want to ask questions, express opinions, or give feedback, ✨ there is a thread for that right here! :) ✨

  2. Anyone can post! If you see something relevant on discord (as in, about Subeta, contacting the staff, updated features, planned changes, news, etc) please do share! This is a group effort for anyone who happens to browse discord. Updates can be small or large, games or bugs etc.

  3. If you post an update, please include:

  • A screenshot of the staff's comments and, if applicable, a screenshot of the comments they're responding to.
  • A text transcript of ALL the comments that you screenshot, staff or not.
  • The day that the comments were posted
  • It's nice etiquette to block out usernames of non-staff members

(Do your best to get the context of the updates, but remember people can also join discord themselves if they want to @ staff directly or get further clarification. Just do your best, this is a learning process for everyone. <3)

Message from Keith

Quote by Keith
Hey folks, just wanted to address taking screenshots and from discord and posting them to Subeta. I have absolutely no problem with that! but I think it&;s important to add some context about how Discord works versus posting here on Subeta.</p>
<p>Discord is a conversation. When I&;m chatting there, I&;m responding to bug reports in real-time, asking people to test things, answering questions, and yeah - sometimes venting when something breaks at 2am. It&;s casual, it&;s fast-moving, and context can get lost in minutes. When I post here on Subeta, that&;s different - it&;s Keith Making An Official Post, and I have to be a lot more careful about what I say and how I say it (probably part of the problem!)</p>
<p>I want to be transparent about where things stand: [b]Subeta is now a hobby project for me
and a second job for most of the team. Over the last 7-10 years, everyone has had to find other jobs to support themselves. After paying for servers, vendors, and the legal requirements of running a site like this (did you know we might have to shut down access in Mississippi because of their new ID laws? Lawyers aren&;t cheap! Did you know we have to go through yearly COPPA compliance? Or that the &quot;privacy policy&quot; link at the bottom of the page is legally required to be updated and so we have to use a service that does that, which costs... lots), there&;s nothing left. I haven&;t taken a paycheck in over 5 years! That isn&;t a complaint, I really get so much from being able to work on Subeta and if it that weren&;t the case I&;d have tried to get rid of it years ago!</p>
<p>That&;s created a cycle - less staff time means fewer events and plots, which means fewer active users, which continues the wheel. I get it, and it&;s frustrating for everyone.</p>
<p>But here&;s the thing: sites like Subeta just don&;t exist anymore. Look around the internet - virtual pet sites are closing every year. We&;re essentially the last of a dying breed, running on commitment and nostalgia. Google traffic has collapsed and any company that relied on getting new organic traffic from Google is now in a tailspin.</p>
<p>I&;ve been &quot;on call&quot; for 20 years now. I can&;t take a vacation without a laptop because if Subeta goes down, I&;m either fixing it or walking someone through the fix over the phone. I spend 1-2 hours every day rewriting old code, hoping it buys us another decade online.</p>
<p>I&;m fortunate enough in my professional life that I can keep Subeta running without worrying about the money. But I want everyone to understand the reality: this is a massive commitment being maintained by people doing it in their spare time (in my case - the rest of the staff is still paid for their incredible work! However, like I mentioned, for most folks this is a second job now), because we care about keeping this place alive.</p>
<p>And look - I don&;t even like Discord! I agree with many of you about its downsides. But it&;s purely a time thing. I can have Discord open while I&;m writing code, push a fix, get immediate feedback, and make adjustments - the whole feedback loop happens in minutes. I can fix a bug someone is reporting in real-time. Using the forums takes significantly more time and energy. We don&;t have the resources to pay someone to manage community communication, and in the past we&;ve considered having more volunteer or user-run positions. Maybe that&;s something worth revisiting as we continue to get smaller.</p>
<p>So when you see me complaining in Discord (or a screenshot!) about something breaking, or being casual about delays - that&;s the context. I&;m still here, the team is still here, and we&;re doing everything we can to keep Subeta going for as long as possible.</p>
<p>Subeta is so important to me, and the people who still come here every day. I&;m going to make sure that it has what it needs to run until the very last wizard quest!

On to the discord screenshots!

(Previous to this bit, users were bringing up the issue with Spells Galore (click here for more info) and it wasn't immediately clear to Keith that this was about the legacy shop and not the Kumos shop. A few different users pointed this out and I won't screenshot all of them.)

User: I think the daily buy limit in Kumos is sufficient, if someone really wants to buy out a store without scripts they could try but the limit would stop them. The issue are the legacy stores, especially Spells Galore, where IMO the scripting is clear. Continuously sold out at all hours of the day. When you do see items, it's always the first item in the store - regardless of whether there are higher price or rarity items further down

Keith: I'm working on it folks 🙂

User: Thank you! I hope the legacy spells shop issue is addressed. I'm very curious about that!

Keith: It'll be addressed by teh shop being removed in favor of the kumos version

User: I was thinking it should be addressed by finding out if a script is being used and taking action against the abuser. The Kumos spells shop hasn't been restocking all items.

User: Yeah, is there any way you can check if someone is using a script? Like can you see if someone is online and buying from the shop 24/7, which is humanly impossible 😛

Keith: The goal is to remove the legacy site So my focus is going to be on improving the kumos site based on feedback, and I'm going to be making as few as possible changes to the legacy site.

Keith: I'm not planning to add any kind of detection to the legacy shop, it's very likely we will just be turning off legacy shops entirely very soon. i mean, quite literally the version of php that runs the legacy site is not going to be supported at some point soon

User: where is the best place to give kumos feedback? there are some specific things about legacy that i LOVE that aren’t on kumos yet and i’m not sure if they’re in the plans!

Keith: it’s honestly here. i look at the forums when i get a chance, but i am able to get feedback faster here. if you make a forum post somewhere with all of your feedback together and poke me when im here

User: Not the first time lack of staff communication has been brought up but I’ll bring it up every single time.

Keith: You can bring it up! I'm the only person who can program on the site, I haven't been paid to do it in 4 years because Subeta just doesn't make that much money. It's run by a skeleton crew of mostly people who have part or full time side jobs because Subeta doesn't make that much money.

If the communication in the last few years has made you want to cancel your subscription, unfortuantely it's not going to change. These kind of sites went out of fashion a long time ago (as the VCs who poured millions into the Neopets revamp have seen) - we're seeing most sites the age of Subeta shut down (if they didn't 15 years ago). It's honestly a miracle that it still exists. If you aren't getting value of your subscription, it really wont' hurt my feelings if you cancel!

Keith: The cash shop is entirely in the process of being moved over to Kumos including the item shop (which you could find if you were crafting with searching URLs!) and the subscriptions. Once they're all moved over together I planne to post about it ❤️ There is meant to be a little box at the top of the site that alerts people whent eh site changed, but that hasn't worked since I pushed it out :/ If we bring on people to do things like communication, or take messages from here back to the forums, I get accused of abusing people for free labor on the flip side! i would love to have a little group of volunteers who could ensure that items get moved around correctly, that forums get responded to, etc

Keith: (that’s to say pls keep giving feedback- and i will keep getting to it! except things like the site being down take priority, and my time is really limited!)

User: Are kumos quests supposed to only be giving 7 csc for completing them? :hm: people on the forums are saying they’re now getting 7 csc instead of 20.

Keith: Yup, they’ve been reduced. 20 per day was just too much, and i said in their launch post they could be pushed down

User: Why did the fundraiser idea never come to be?

Keith: Honestly, because then I have to do something with the funds that are raised, like hire a team, bring on programmers, etc. And I just don't have the time to run Subeta full time, picking up steam and trying to run it like a startup again, I've got a job! I don't have the time to put together a fundraising package, make a bunch of promises that are hopefully attainable, do the work required that comes before something like a kickstarter (a TON of work) while running the site, moving features over to a platform that will hopefully run for another 10 years without a ton of intervention Unfortunately everything requires an investment in time, and that's the thing we've got a lot less of today than we did when I was a teenager

It's very annoying to have like, responsibilities and a mortgage and people who rely on me 😛

Keith: I’m really trying to get away from all of the things that we just lifted from Neopets without questioning why or how they fit into Subeta.

Keith: but i guess the point i’m trying to get across, is this is my sandbox. i get to make changes and try new things, because it’s mine. i appreciate the feedback, i tweak and make major changes based on that feedback, but at the end of the day it’s my subeta. and so sometimes the answer for why i’ve changed something, like shops, while rewriting them is because i wanted to try something different while porting it over. we’ve got months until the version of php that runs the legacy subeta is no longer supported. and the only thing moving forward porting subeta to a sustainable and runable future, is my interest in doing it. we do not have the money to pay any kind of engineer, from any part of the world, to do this work

October 4th (Regarding fishing)

Keith: i would just... ignore the prizes. it's really hard to get right - they were determined when i made the feature. Like, sP prizes under 500,000 can flucuate in a day depending on just about anythin i'm going to continue working on them (and i appreciate seeing all of them, it helps calibrate) when i say ignore, i mean... give it a lot of grace haha anyway i mentioned that we found some artwork that hadn't been used for a feature a long time ago and i'm able to basically use the fishing system on that 👀 [photo of “beach exploration” using a “lvl 1 metal detector”]

Keith: you will only get trash and common prizes in the first level and common only from getting the spot first difficulty level*

User: I have another question: is our pet’s fishing level intended to pass our own? I’m still on level 17 and my pet is about to be on level 19.

Keith: They level a little bit faster because I anticipated people wanting to maybe switch them up a little bit. They're meant to increase a little bit faster than that, in fact (and their level doesn't matter / change the game at all, it's just a RPG value)
