hi all, i'm looking to make a viking-style HA similar to what they wear in shows like the last kingdom or vikings. i'd also love to have a thor's hammer necklace, if one exists. i'm fine with buying CC for any of it, but ideally i want something that is available for me to buy; i don't find 'the hunt' of CC stuff very fun. T-T i have a CC background i just bought that will be perfect for a viking HA i think, so i want to put it to use! i'm looking for chest, overchest, bottoms, hair, facial hair, etc. thank you!

I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED. I'll do my best.

👀 Vikings, you say?

Let's see, non-CW items because I try to keep it able to replicated by users who ask without having to break a piggy bank and these are all fairly gender neutral. I just found these to be the most workable for "Viking" style:

Mantles:

Shirts/Tunics: Plate armor like for the Sir Buckley cuirass isn't exactly period specific, for reason of plate armor more than leather, chainmaille, and bits of plate armor but not to that extent, it's omitted. * ** **

Breeches/Leg Armor: Anything brown, black or leather-ish looking, tbh. Mind the newer ones for missing fingers. **

Boots: ** ** **

Face Items: Beards - /* (I love the Ginger Braid, tbh, mostly because the whole set of beards like that have parts from the Havamal in the descriptions.)

Facial Scars - **

Face Paint -

These are scant because there are already many, many restocking items that can be used with some layering tricks. My own is two of the electric shaver items layered on themselves and then the Delish beads over it.

Hair! Let's not forget hair. Per historical accounts, Vikings were clean, kempt and usually had some form of braids in their hair, male or female. That all is historically accurate. My take is the Delish Near and Delish Ooh styles redeemed and custom colors. Piercings were also a thing so you can still do that if you wish.

**

  • Actually relatively close. The tunic looks Saami. ** Various poses and colors. *** CW

I just found these last night and I absolutely adore them, bought the summer and winter versions but these are CWs:

I didn't add some because the tattoos are very personal taste. They're normally found in the arms layer.

Anyways, I hope I helped get you established. Don't forget that you can technically use the kilts too! With the fly plaid over the HA's left shoulder, they're in the body layer. That's actually what sparked off a lot of my Viking HAs, the red is close to my family tartan and we came from Vikings. 😁

And if you want to channel Ivar, the crown is the Crown of the Thunder King.

People get really ridiculous about what was worn or not worn at the time but keep this in mind: Vikings would have worn lots of leather, lots of furs, belts, and would have had leg wrappings and leather boots. It would have been bright colors as historical sources have documented bright colored tunics and a penchant for loving bright (lampwork) glass beads and outside sources (not from England) state about them having blue, green and black tattoos sometimes from "neck to fingernail."

Later, as the case was with my family, some married into what would become Norse-Gaels (Barid mac Imair, specifically for me, 36th great-grandfather) which would have had the influx of Celtic influence including the kilts and tartans. You also had the Varangian guard of the Byzantine Empire. And! Last but not least, you had the 'Rus, who split into becoming modern day Ukraine and Russia. If you want to go the mythological route, have fun! The same theme applies but think like God of War or even Assassin's Creed Valhalla (mine's my take on M!Eivor, who would be my technical cousin.)

In short, Vikings were very, very far travelled and there's no really wrong way to make an HA inspired by them.

wow this is incredible, thank you so much!!! i really appreciate such an in-depth response i can't wait to start collecting some stuff!! it is funny you brought up and because i bought those this morning and those were what inspired me to make this post :P i've wanted to make a viking-style HA for a long time but never had enough inspiration to really try (i find the wardrobe very overwhelming) but once i saw those backgrounds i was thinking alright this is my sign to finally do it lol i've actually seen you around on the forums and always admired your HAs. i have a lot of norwegian family history (although i haven't been able to trace it back far enough to say for sure there were vikings down the line, only just traced back to about 1500 or so) so i think that's really cool that you have all that viking family history!! actually crazy how much we have in common, i'm also trans, also autistic, also tons of hyperfixations, nordic family heritage and a love for vikings...are we...each other? (O_o)

HA! You have excellent taste in backgrounds then. I was really about to rage at Subeta for the winter one because it wouldn't let me buy that at first.

The wardrobe has always been overwhelming for me. What I have for my Viking HAs has been a steady dribble of things over a couple years now, Subeta has some things that work great and others that... ugh.

But d'awww, thank you. c: I try to make them as accurate as I can, I'm pleased to know that someone likes them.

My fam, if you want to google it, is MacLachlan. You're not going to find me in there (yet) but you'll get the massive history to it. Like I said in the big item post, the name pretty much starts with Barid (as a Jarl of Lochlainn) and the name is so old that the main branch is like, "You have the name? You're family. You have a grandparent who bore it? You're family."

I've been able to get back to Viking Age England with my deep dive into my family tree. Both my maternal and paternal sides have it (one came from Sigurd Snake in the Eye and the other came from Ivar, from whom we probably got Barid and then got the MacLachlan name.)

Trans siblings!!! I love it! Yes for neurospicy too! Tons of hyperfixations, the Viking one is the newest and strongest (because the show fans are WEIRD sometimes...) I know some people love to diminish the Nordic heritage but it's still cool to find out, it's definitely rekindled my love of history and language learning.

Maybe switched at birth? XD

Thank-you for making this post! I'm always on the hunt for more Viking inspired/related/appearing things for my own HA and my pets TCs! Also, I love Skoll and Hait! Mind if I link to Skoll on my pet Sol's page, and Hati on my pet Mani's page?

By Odin's beard you made such a great list of items! Some of which I haven't even found yet and will end up going into my pet's TC. Also those Tankards you found? Thanks for sharing them! Just scooped them up for myself!

I do try to make the All-Father proud. 🤫 I know there's more but I am smol and that list took me a good hour last night anyways, I should make up a better one sometime when I have the time.

The tankards are amazing, I love the stave church in the background.

Kumos and I don't get along very well.

Looks great!

But. Viking helmets never had horns, the only one found with horns was a delightful artifact in Sweden called the Vikso helmet and that was as old to the Vikings as the Vikings are to us. Blame Wagner for any and all horned Viking helmets, it wasn't until his production of The Ring Cycle that the horns/wings popped up.
