How do you wear items like

when they deviate from the base model of the avatar without it looking off from the base? Do you just have to model your avatar around not having a base at all by hiding the base completely or is there a way to break it up, like hiding only the base legs somehow?

if you click the 'Base' tab in the wardrobe, there are toggles for turning limbs on and off. for example, here i have toes, feet and legs turned off so i can use items with leg mods:
