I'm new to battling, could someone explain to me how the numbers for exp work?

I just fought cursed irion with my tier 3 pet and got 98 exp, but on the challenge page it says cursed irion gives 250 exp. I know the exp you get slowly goes up as you re-challenge them but ime it doesn't usually reach the listed number within the first 5 battles.

I expected that exp gained wouldn't scale since the exp cost for stat boosts increases as your tier increases, so I figured that's where scaling was applied.

You hit the number on the challenge page with your 10th win. Each win preceding that decreases the EXP you earn by about 10%.

So for Cursed Irion it should be: Win 1 - 98 EXP Win 2 - 109 EXP Win 3 - 121 EXP Win 4 - 134 EXP Win 5 - 149 EXP Win 6 - 165 EXP Win 7 - 183 EXP Win 8 - 203 EXP Win 9 - 225 EXP Win 10 - 250 EXP

The sP you earn from winning works in the opposite way. You get the full amount on your first win, then it decreases by 10% for each win after that.

You’re right that it is kind of silly though since EXP costs already scale by tier. But it’s been this way for as long as I can remember.
