sorry if this is stupid, but i was wondering given the state of things in the uk currently, if it would be possible to get a new halloween design for alexander this year? i'm hoping i'm not the only trans person who sees that and winces a little. sorry, this isn't meant to be a contentious statement, i don't want to start any fights, i just think subeta is such an inclusive site and it might be good! :)

Yeah yeah I get it that series is ridiculously popular and influential but JK's been off the deep-end in hatred for trans folks for a LONG time now. It's to the point that I'm seeing far-right people (who've likely never read the books) claim to be fans of Harry Potter just to, idk, own the libs who are more critical of Rowling? Feels weird to see an NPC dressed in HP gear on The Queer Pet Site that exists because the other big one(s) didn't let you say "gay" until very recently.

Some suggested alternatives, keeping with the book character theme:

• Either Aziraphale or Crowley from Good Omens, super popular right now
• Someone from Game of Thrones
• Perhaps Martin (or another heroic critter) from Redwall
• Count Olaf from A Series of Unfortunate Events (this might be especially good as a creepier Morostide outfit)
• Gandalf would make for an awesome outfit if you want to keep with a magical theme
• Willy Wonka started as a kid's book character and would be immediately distinguishable!
• Any Wizard of Oz character. I think Alexander looks rather meek and soft-spoken, so perhaps the Cowardly Lion?
• Virtually any Seussian character

I won't lie, I tend to use a browser extension to block site art that I either don't care for or that takes up too much room on the screen, and I've got Alexander's Morostide outfit filtered out. I'd rather not be reminded of something that was tainted by such vitriol for, y'know, me and all my chosen family members, especially when I'm on this site to relax and forget for a while that my state governor thinks I'm "Lucifer at his finest" 🙃

I'm missing the point (like maybe I'm just dumb and slept weird) other than something is JK influenced and by that notion alone...

I like the Redwall idea. Might I suggest Taggerung?

oooh, yeah. Agreed; time for poor Alexander to get a costume change. There's lots of magician characters in other books if y'all want to stick with that, or go in a different direction. Maybe even a nostalgia theme with a classic kids' book character (Madeline, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Corduroy, so on) (He could be Max or a Wild Thing from Where the Wild Things Are!)

Actually, it just dawned on me that they might not be able to do any of those exactly because of copyright laws and such. Leaving up the suggestion anyway in the hopes that it'll facilitate other, better ones.

I keep forgetting about the Morostide costumes. If the staff have an artist available who can draw a new outfit for him, then I'm all for changing it. There are some items on the site that might be references as well, but maybe their names and descriptions can be changed so that it's a less direct reference?

I'd love to see him be Merlin or Gandalf

Support. It's kind of a downer to see HP stuff these days; I grew up on those books, like everyone else my age, but now it just reminds me that the author and tons of other rich and powerful people hate me and my community for made-up reasons 🙃

I'd love Gandalf too - or anything from Lord of the Rings. A hobbit? An elf? An orc? Any is fine with me :P

I used to really enjoy HP stuff, but now I cannot look at any of it without thinking about the author and feeling viscerally disgusted by her.

I'm all for a change. Alexander has a lot of options thanks to his Library theming and I do think that changing his outfit is a really good idea. I really don't feel comfortable with that series right now. A new outfit would be fun and maybe you can run a poll to see which would be preferred? Maybe include some of the other, older outfits as well if you'd rather limit any discussion on the subject of the author's remarks. But I do think Alexander would benefit from an update to his costume.

If we get a new outfit for Alexander I would love to see something from an older book. Maybe the Gandalf idea but something obscure or less popular would also be really fun.

Big support for this. We can't erase all the HP items on site, but changing the outfit of one of the NPC would be a nice statement.

Subeta has always been super progressive and has always supported the community. It's a safe space. Let's not give any more visibility to JKR

As someone who is re-reading the series, having Alexander be Tagg or if you don't care about the gender thing, the High Rhulain would be awesome.

Support. Dressing up as Subeta's very own Wizard even would be funny, if we didn't stick to book character parodies only.

Saggitarius used to dress as the Wizard, Mori and Nori dress as each other, and Maleria dresses as Shinwa, so Alexander could be another Subeta character after all.
