Not sure if this best fits in Suggestions / Ideas, Brainstorming, or Site Feedback but I figured any would work?
Thinking about the long term success of Subeta, it seems like the current challenge / biggest need is doing a site-wide recode to bring things up to a modern and cohesive format. I can't recall if it was here, on discord, or on Kumos that had explained the labor hours and cost to do this, but it was a lot.
I'm totally on board for a fundraiser with this as a specific goal, and also wonder if there are any connections through the user base that could help spread out the labor or lower the cost.
As I've been clicking around the site more than normal to find flowers this month, I've found myself wondering how many folks regularly use certain features and if removing those things, at least for a while, wouldn't be helpful to the site's current operations and to the process of bringing Sub to 2024.
Things I am curious about user base use of:
Don't get me wrong, I love that Subeta has so much to offer and so much variety! I think these things have value and could even be expanded in some ways in the future. And if it isn't helpful to remove anything, then I see no reason to "take away" anything that already exists. But I am wonder if - for now - there are things that the user base doesn't engage with much and that isn't a factor in getting / keeping users that would be beneficial to "remove" in the sense of "would make a difference in the outcome of the recoding project or current site functionality".
Please don't bring the pitchforks and torches if you love any of these things XD I'd love to hear from others - what do you not engage with much, and what would you be super upset to see go away or change?
I know for me those (listed above) are some of the things I don't use often, but I'm all about all the pet things (profiles, TC, resort, minions, etc), wardrobe, quests, forums, and there are some games I play daily (reflection, random, caliph's tombs, item hunt).
It also may make zero difference to remove anything in which case this is a moot pondering LOL.
My mind is mostly on - "what can be done to make the path to an updated and thriving Subeta easier to travel" so please feel free to weigh in on that as well?
It goes without saying but please don't use this as a "venting" opportunity. Constructive ideas are great! Please also remember that the site is complex and has been built over the last two decades and is run by a skeleton crew of dedicated folks, so be considerate and kind please!
I agree that some things should absolutely be removed for the moment or dropped to the bottom of recode priorities, if not entirely. There are pages that go into an area but you can't back out of them from that page (which, technically, is not good coding practice or ADA compliant.)
Anyways, I could prattle on about that and no one would care to hear it. But I'll reiterate the point: some things just seem to be server strain at this point, especially with an effort to recode a massive site essentially alone.

ADA as in American's with Disabilities Act? I actually would love to hear more about that or if you have a resource to share? I had no idea that was a thing related to website (I mean I've learned a lot more about general accessibility but haven't heard about function things like that) and am always trying to be more aware!
Thank you for the input on the idea!
Exactly, and I'm happy to list these off. Here's the list but abridged, that includes but isn't limited to:
But yes, this is just a portion. If you want an example of ADA inaccessibility, just open Pinterest.

Thank you so much for sharing that link and giving me an overview! I'll have to read through it so I'm better informed. I would definitely vote for accessibility over some of the content (if we had to pick one or the other atm), and I would hope that when Subeta is recoded this will be a priority!
While I agree that many things can/could fall to the wayside to make it easier to recode, this wouldn't really work. One of the problems with Subeta is that its an interconnected patchwork. This means that if you chop off one part this might cause a seemingly unrelated part to fail because of odd coding. Taking the time to trace the coding of a part you want to remove to make sure it doesn't mess with some other part of the site would take more effort and time than simply recoding all of it.
Also, they are already doing that in a sense. They aren't fixing things like games that have broken unless they take a look and find a simple fix. They just aren't removing the feature, just leaving it in place as is, broken or only partially working.

Thank you for the explanation! I'm not all that familiar with coding so I wasn't sure if this kind of thing would be helpful or harder to do. What you said makes sense!
Maybe it could lower the labor hours / cost of redoing the whole site in one sweep if things got removed from the recode list? But I'm not sure how much of a difference it could make without losing out on too much of the site. And I'm sure folks like different things in different proportion so just like I wouldn't want to lose certain things, I wouldn't want to take something away from someone else that they like just as much.
I don't think things should necessarily go away because features that might look dead or not being used is probably useful for some rare item or another. You'd have to do an analysis on what items are affected and how they might now go out if you cut it.
Also, I do want to point out that we have the homestead on Kumos. I haven't tried it out to see how much work Keith has put into it but... it doesn't exist on this Subeta. I dunno, I think it's a bit out of place to talk about what we can cut here when Keith is playing around with new concepts over there.
Great point! And thank you for sharing about the discussions going on at Kumos. I'll have to venture there more to learn what's going on!
Based on insights from other folks, this concept doesn't seem to be particularly helpful after all lol, so this board can be locked! Thanks!
