Couldn't find a thread like this so I decided to make one myself. Let's face it, a lot of items are in a different Layer than we anticipate, and oftentimes we have to check across multiple layers to find items of a certain location. Let's clear up the confusion and sort things out(literally). My suggestions are below, and post yours, or any remarks/suggestions/advice. I'm not currently looking into adding/removing entire layers, just making clearer sense of what's already there.

My personal biggest areas of concern are moving Leg-Morphs(like those that replace legs with animal limbs) to Body, and detangling the very-blurred Ground/Foreground. Figuring out what's Body and what's Fullbody would be nice too but I honestly have no clue which is meant to be which.... does Fullbody mean INCLUDING the head?? Does Body mean Torso, TorsoLegs, TorsoArms, or everything except the head?! We need clarity. o.o

BELONGS IN BODY
MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE. It is so incredibly difficult to find the "centaur" bodies under Bottoms where all the pants are. The ones under Body are easiest to find. The Scarecrow bodies are under Foreground but since they're meant as body mods, seem better suited to Body or Fullbody(?).

BELONGS IN GROUND *All Lifelike Velosotor Dolls *All Lifelike Endeavor Dolls *All Lifelike Devonti Dolls
Most of these are currently located in Foreground, but feel better-suited for the Ground due to their placement. Specifically, they can be placed on the ground around the Human, and/or they have a toe-hole for the human to appear in front of, making it NOT ENTIRELY foreground(Mushroom Spirits). My general belief is that, if the item appears in the vicinity of the scene, it is Ground; if it's in front of the scene, it's Foreground.

Always here for Layer revamp threads! Here's the one I made back in 2021 with some of my thoughts about redoing areas that have a lot of overlap or things that seem misplaced, and one of the threads that inspired mine.

they/them/theirs, please.

Those are good threads, it's a shame they didn't make it far off the ground and got locked, since this is a consistently-persistent issue over the years. It'd help if everyone was in mostly-universal agreement of what items would go where; for instance, you thought Foreground was for whatever the player didn't stand on, which included companions, while I'm of the opinion that companions belong on the Ground if that is where they exist in relation to the Human, whether in front of or behind.

Overall it's difficult without true guidelines, regardless I'm still gonna just be doing the best I can with what's there without throwing the "WE NEED A NEW LAYER" argument in, since in all my years of playing I've only ever seen the Hair layer added, hahah. Maybe I should throw my ideal guidelines up there and see if anyone has any counterarguments or additions, but I don't wanna muddy up this foundling thread further and just wanna get people on board with moving what DESPERATELY NEEDS moving right now. XD Like I've been struggling with finding those animal limbs forever since some of them fell into the Bottoms layer after years of Body. x_x And some of those tumbled-gem glow overlays are hiding somewhere in the Backgrounds last time I checked...

With well over 100,000 (including CWs) wearable items we NEED more options. More layers, better layers, tags, drawers, color coding, and anything else they can come up with to search, categorize and find specific items.

The sheer number of items makes it very hard to find things. Adding in weird naming, no naming conventions, and odd/unrelated images just ups the confusion.

The art is fantastic, the names are fun. I wouldn't want to change anything about it because it works so well for TCs, galleries and just the fun of it. But it does make using the wardrobe challenging. Better, more consistent layering would help a lot.

I would love to see an "official" description of what goes in which layer (I'm pretty sure there isn't one right now). Also, back in the day a lot of items ended in certain layers due to constraints and limits on how many items could be worn from each layer. When they made a costume trunk, or Delish set, intended to be worn all together, they couldn't reasonably put multiple items in the same layer. So that's also where some of the original layer confusion stems from. That isn't a problem anymore, of course, but it still feeds the confusion for current items because whoever is responsible for deciding on the layer sees examples of older, similar items and categorizes based on that info.

I'm very much a fan of the idea of creating additional layers and clear definitions for what goes in each layer! [User=Armor] shared some great previous posts that have visual examples! Super helpful.

When I think about sorting the clothing and clarifying, I tend to think of groupings like these: Foreground - item is designed to be in front of the HA, more than 50% of the item overlaps with the HA positioning Background - item is designed to be behind the HA Ground - item is designed to be beneath the feet of the HA Adjacent - item is designed to fill the space around the HA and may be partially in front of or behind the HA, but primarily appears to exist on the same plane

Bottom - Item covers the HA's lower body between the waist and legs, may also cover the legs or down to the feet Legs - item covers the area between the top of the legs and the feet, may cover all or part of the area but must include between the knee and bottom Ankles - item does not go above the knee and is not shoes Feet - shoes, items that cover exclusively the foot (below the ankle)

Fullbody - item covers from neck to ankles, may include arms and hands, may include feet or above neck Body - item covers more than one primary area of the body (example chest and bottom, bottom and legs and feet)

Back - item appears to connect to the body on the back of the HA, clothing items should not wrap around the HA covering the shoulders or arms, but body mods may (ex wings) Shoulders - items that sit perched on the shoulder, outerwear or accessories that drape across over a shoulder, or cover the upper arm and chest (ex: wrap) Arms - items that sit on the HAs body or hold onto the HAs body below the shoulder and do not extend to the torso (don't go past the shoulder). Items may go all the way down to or past fingers, but must have some connection above elbow. Forearm - Items like accessories that attach below the elbow and above the hand. These may extend past the hand or to the hand, but must attach between the hand and elbow Hand - item that is exclusive to the hands and do not attach above the wrist such as rings or gloves Held - items that are perceived as held in one or both of the hands

Hair - Hair Hat - Only hats Head - non-hat accessories or companions that sit on top of the head, may include things that cover the head and face such as a space helmet, sunglasses that sit on the head would go here

Ears - Items that attach to the ears such as earrings or earmuffs, ear mods Face - Items that change the face, sunglasses that are worn on the face would go here, facial hair

Chest - clothing that is perceived as a top not intended to be outerwear, bulk of the item resides in area below neck / above waist / above elbows but may also extend over the neck or elbows such as a turtle neck type neckline or a long sleeved shirt Overchest - clothing that is perceived as an outerlayer, these items resides primarily over the torso such as sweatshirts and sweaters but may extend to the ground on either side of the HA such as a long jacket and may cover the arms.

Obviously there's some additional nuance that needs to be added to some of these, and some items will challenge the ideas and help define them more clearly. Additional layers may help with sorting items, but too many may make it a headache to pick where they belong.

While I would love to see this happen, I think I'd rather staff continue to focus on recoding the site for long-term preservation / function and address this when things are stable. I also prefer to see new pets and additional events over reorganizing the wardrobe, especially since we have the drawers option.

A great long term goal and I am super on board with this, because it's always made me a little batty seeing how some things get organized in there LOL.

Unless we see a layer/category for Companions, I feel like floating/flying companions go to Foreground and ones that clearly lay around the feet of the Human should go to Ground, being that they are at Ground Level in space. That's my current feeling on that matter.

Foreground to me means anything that exists at the frontmost layer in space, and has no "Base point" in the scene. Hovering/flying items and characters would go here as well due to their lack of definitive location. My preference is that Backgrounds are complete or near-complete Scenes, either all-encompassing or mostly-encompassing. My preference is also that half-scenes such as Docks/etc be situated to Ground if they lack a "background" feature like sky or distant objects that are some immeasurable distance away in space. But this is all with the imagination of the Human being situated at a point in a 3D space, which one of the ways to look at it, but not THE ONLY way. Artistic matters are left to much interpretation.

EDIT: by Pinocchio Here's my confusing diagram of my visualization of the 3D space(minus the Human). The Skeletons, sunbeam, and Cat-moon all belong in Foreground as they do not have a speciifc location on the Z-axis in space. The blob rabbit, mushrooms, and LED Tiles are all Ground as that is the plane they reside on in that same space. The Background is for the furthermost pieces in the overall space, or for a complete full scene. Obviously with clever arrangements, the Foreground pieces can be "placed" farther back in the scene based on contextual pieces, but for coherency's sake, items that have no "base" in the scene feel best in Foreground. Excuse my wordsalad, this is just my late-night poor explanation of my headcanon. XD
