Hey, Subeta fam,

I've been pronouncing Subeta as "Soo-BEH-dah". How do you guys pronounce it? It feels like such an alien word to me, I'm starting to think I pronounce it wrong.

Also, why is Subeta called Subeta? Does anyone know the lore?

i'd say i pronounce it about the same. sue like the name, bet like gambling, uh like i can't think of what to say.

though i feel like the "correct" pronunciation is probably sue-beta, as in the greek letter.

as for why it's called that, i'm not actually sure even though i've been around a while. i DO remember there being some VERY VERY old controversy because... well i was never super clear, but i interpreted the case to be that there was a character with the same name, well-known within certain online communities, who was notorious for being depicted in graphic fetish art? so if you searched for subeta, you might also find images of this character, and i think some people claimed this was intentional?

again, i could have TOTALLY misinterpreted that or gotten things mixed up. i get the sense the controversy was intended to be buried many years ago so i might not supposed to be even talking about it lol 😖

, that's fascinating!! It would be funny to find out, after so many years, if it's pronounced differently. Even if you're not sure what the reason is, that's still a very interesting story! Thank you for sharing. 😁

here is an interesting thread about how people pronounce the name. You aren't saying it wrong, because I don't think there is a right way. Soo-bet-ah or Sub-eater? .

Many thousands of years ago, Keith did some "Ask Keith" videos, where he likely pronounced the name of the site how he originally envisioned it. Not sure if its possible to track down these videos. They say nothing is ever gone forever on the net, but I wouldn't know where to even start.

As for the origin of the word, I have a very, very vague memory of Keith saying it meant sword, or maybe weapon in an Asian language (possibly even a fictional language).

lol yeah like i said, could be mixing things up and i definitely don't think there was any intentional, like, wrongdoing or anything. just might have been a weird coincidence that some people decided to turn into an issue—subeta used to be the target of various other online communities who felt the need to start rivalries.

I remember attending a meetup in NYC years ago and that was a question Jess (I think) had asked the attendees. I pronounced it suh-BAY-tuh, but that could just be the Brooklyn in me :)

I found one! If you search Keith Answers - Masquerade on Youtube at the 3:51 mark he says Subeta. :)

Haha I'll have to go back and watch them again! I remember watching them when they were first posted but that feels like ages ago. I feel old. I just remember I always pronounced it sa-beta myself. 😂

I remember there being a theory wayyyy back when I was still a fresh, new Subetan that Subeta was derived from the word for "everyone/all" in Japanese, so I pronounce it like that word, except with -ta at the end instead of -te. (So "su-" like "sumo," "be-" like "beta fish," and "-ta" like tanuki, with no stressed syllables/equal stress on each syllable.) I have no solid evidence on whether that theory was true or not, but it stuck with me, so it'd be awfully hard for me to change my pronunciation now, haha~

I had the same impression as the theory mentioned above, that with all the early Japanese/anime influence items on the site, that the site's name must have been inspired by Japanese, possibly the word "subete" which meant roughly "everything/all/everyone", so I've always pronounced it sue-bay-tah.
