I am new (ish) and have just been clicking buttons to see what happens - I now have a rift pet, how do I turn it back or should I just make a new pet in the species that I want?

There are elixirs you can use to change your pet. Let's say you had a Common Feli before. You could use a to change your pet to that. What pet did you have before? I probably have an elixir in my vault. That's where I put every elixir I get from quests.

What was your pet before? Any easy way to go back is to look up a potion or elixir for the species it used to be. For example, if it was an Urubu, you can look up different 'Urubu Elixir's under Search Shops. I had to change my Kumos back into a Kumos via a 'Kumos Elixir' a few weeks ago.

it depends on what it was originally. A lot of pets are available through Elixirs.

Examples:

Just buy the elixir, click on it in your inventory and use it on the pet. Rarer colors or pets you might have to get creative. Might be cheaper/easier to remake from scratch rather than change the rift pet. Can't really say until we know what you want it to be back to.
