Hi, I'm currently on the 3$ a month sub and I'd like to upgrade to 5$- however there doesn't seem to be an option to upgrade without canceling my current sub, and the site says I won't be able to choose another plan until next month. Do I really have to wait until next month to upgrade my sub?

yes, you have to cancel and wait for the subscription period to run out (the date will be listed on the sub page). then you can re-subscribe at your new preferred tier.
