I'm still a bit new when it comes to buying/acquiring CWs. I sometimes browse the newest CWs listed and will find out an item has been categorized as private.

Does it tend to mean the item is not really for sale? Is it considered rude to ask about slotting/buying the item?

it means the item is for just them, or a select group of people in their ping and / or friend group. so it would be considered a faux pas to ask for the item.
