I don't buy any unless I'm doing so for Major Drills quests.
Many years ago when I was trying for the achievement, I bought between 100K-1M worth of tickets daily until I won. It took less than a month.
Since then I think I've won twice, once when a bunch of people bought for me for my birthday and another time when a person bought me just a couple of megatickets as a thank you.
