As my virus progresses I noticed all my stuff are showing on the outside. Are the viruses linked to base or is this a bug?

Don't mind the oil leaks...one of the Steves will get it!

Yeah, the virus stages take the place of your HA base so if you keep your worn items equipped, they will show over the virus
