Came back after a break and I don't remember quite how Steamwork pets work

Can I get the Steamwork gender (the gear) from transforming a current pet, or does it need to be a new pet? Either way do I just need the schematic and the key to make one?

you just need the schematic and the key, but the gear gender only comes from making a pet (has a built date), not from transforming one (has a born date)
