Main goals:
Main Suggestion:
Create and offer rewards to users based on the number of achievements they have earned. (Ex: Rewards at 100pts, 250, 500, etc. Rewards are awarded 1 time per goal and should be rewards typically only attainable via achievements / not resellable.)
By adding this new type of system it will;
Suggestions for rewards;
Example Tier: “You’ve reached 100 achievement points! Congratulations, you’ve earned the ‘NAME HERE’ Cosmetic! Head over to (link here) to check it out and equip it!”
((This could all be placed on a page with a fill bar so you can keep track of your goals, and click ‘Unlock!’ when you reach a tier so you don’t miss an event for it!))
Concerns;
Would this mean that rewards from single achievements would go away? -- No those would still be added, but less frequently to save staff time and resources.
What about retired achievements? -- This I’m not sure about. Personally I’d love to see staff reuse some of the old plot stuff so new users could experience those things and get achievements from past events, but I know not everyone is keen on that. Guess this one is up to staff to make the tough choices on.
Would all the achievements be super easy or way too hard? -- I think these would be balanced the same way they always have been. I think it could encourage staff to add more ‘tutorial’ like achievements for new (and old players) but also add higher tiered achievements to super old achievements that older users may have been done with for a long time. I also think there would be a good balance of medium difficulty achievements along the way :)
All the rewards suck. -- Feel free to make suggestions! As only one person I have no idea what kind of things everyone else wants! Tried to fit a little for everyone in there but IDK haha.
I am anxious af about posting this suggestion, so here is to hoping it's not the dumbest thing anyone's ever heard. fingers crossed
I really like this suggestion. The only prize i think might not fit is the differently colored user icon thing, that feels more like a gold account or subscription reward to me.
Also I know it is kind of a sub suggestion of a sub suggestion but I actually really like the idea of redoing old plots (if they still have the stuff). Call it a time anomaly/dimensional rift that has to be fixed and they would only have to write a tiny bit of before and after plot to neatly tie it together (the wizard anniversary rift graphics from 2ish years ago could easely be reused there). Keep the prizes the same (also old prize pools for challengers who's was changed) , maybe add one or two to get older users to participate too. And maybe change a unimportant plot point or drop it in the entirely wrong season for that wacky time anomaly/alternate dimension feel.
I don't know what should be done with the plots who's stuff is in the antique store already but I would like to redo those events regardless. I also think I remember that the staff didn't want to do certain kinds of events anymore (book drive, restock war) so those probably would be impossible, Maybe they would be good themes for a questathon with teams.
Just wanted to clarify I mean the 'shape' of the user icon, not the color! Color would remain the same (blue for regular user / gold for GA / all the staff colors) But maybe instead of a tiny little person you could have something like a star or a heart in the appropriate color!
I like the idea of a cosmetic avatar border (I assume you mean like the ones here in the forum, the blue line). Just like the HA headshot one. I'm fully down for achievements giving us those! Especially like during holidays, giving us themed ones for the holidays (Flowers, pumpkins, hearts, etc.)
I'm all for more achievements giving rewards, not like all of them, but some have like the potential for a neat little reward.
(Trying to think of some other ones you haven't mentioned, little anxious though.)
♥ [flower=owl] ♥
I don't think the staff have any plans to redo plots (even though it would be nice to see what they were like cause the wiki doesn't have them all so only the staff have the old images and writing that isn't documented anywhere else), but the achievement prizes could be released in other ways. I'm not sure about forum titles though, maybe they could be attached to other achievements or something.
I know some people have said that they want a way to get prizes from battle-related achievements more than once, especially if they have more than one use, but I think the battle admins are in charge of deciding that.
This seems like a lot of work for not very many users, and a generator of trouble. I have 2300 and this is the work of years, and I don't think that Subeta has that many players who would do that. If any of us can't feel smug or elite by having that many then it is likely IMO that nothing else will give this feeling either.
If they go stepwise like the OP suggests then folks with as many as me would only get five or six points altogether. I guess that makes this part easier?
There's a reason quidditch scores get added to house points which are normally handed out in dribs and drabs to those few exceptional students. It's because otherwise they are so rare and unobtainable that nobody cares about them and they lose their power and appeal.
It also will make any of the rewards as 'retired' in a site where nothing actually retires, because users cannot get Achievements again. If any of these rewards are percieved as valuable by users echoing it around in their FG or the shoutbox then there will be much drama about UNFAIR as if those who worked for it don't deserve it and those who didn't work for it do. (cf current new Achievment which is not impossible as claimed) Not something that is wanted by Subeta.
The site-events cannot be re-done with any kind of easy, they'd need to be re-coded entirely. More than one Staff member has told us this. If Staff are going to do that much coding with their limited time, I'd prefer it to be a new event. Most users feel this way and have said so when presented with this choice. Limited staff time is what it is and wishing will not change this. Sorry, those Achievements are gone and will remain gone . This particular off-topic sub suggestion has no good purpose.
It is intentional acts of the BAs that many rewarded weapon items in Battle are Achievement-related. They didn't used to be that way. Some of us newcomers were eventually earning all of those insanely rare no-longer and insanely expensive no-longer weapons earning them ourselves just like the original battlers did. Oh noes. Oh gosh oooh golly. If any of all y'all want this to change there will need to be a separate Suggestion I think because it will be a big fat deal among the 'preserve value' crowd. Otherwise it will take this Suggestion over. Therefore this particular off-topic sub suggestion is a thread-killer and not helpful to have here.
I'm very leery of an achievement system overhaul. The system right now feels very fragile and easily disrupted.
I've been here 14 years, 11 months, 1 week and have been through 3 achievement system complete changes and 1 major overhaul (IIRC).
That first system no longer exists in any way, shape or form (just vague recollections). The second system barely exists as the old legacy achievements that don't even count. The major overhaul of the current system has never worked correctly and achievements were retired because they simply couldn't be "fixed" (rather than no longer being relevant), and changes to this system have broken it even further (wardrobe achievements are a mess and so are many cumulative achievements that no longer count correctly).
Obviously the achievement system is going to need to be overhauled again whenever the new site comes online completely. So, yes I suppose now is the time to think about how that should happen, if its going to have to change anyway. But I'm finding it very difficult to face it. All the previous changes (and especially losses) have hurt. Stuff that I was "this close to achieving" being gone and all that work for nought. Having to redo, or re-earn stuff I'd already achieved, for it to count in the new system. Also having permanently lost stuff I'd achieved in the last overhaul because I didn't independently keep track of the thousands of achievements I'd earned hurt a ton.
How ever they change the achievement system to fit with the new site, I want all that I have done to still count. I don't want to have to redo grueling repetitive crap (I'm looking at you snowballs, murdered pumpkins and runaway fairies). But then neither do I want brand new shiny stuff that I haven't really earned to just be given to me. I have 2456 achievements currently, there simply isn't much left for me to do - and the ones I can still earn will cost me billions to get! So simply changing it to achievements earned from here on out isn't fair either (a new user has hundreds of easy achievements they can earn points with, while I have none).
I do like some of your ideas, but frankly, your reason (making all achievements matter) is already a thing. I don't really care about the prize. Sure its a nice bonus, but I'm working on achievements because I like challenges and achieving stuff. Others don't care. Making a points system out of achievements won't change that dynamic. Some still won't care, and others will care too much (look at the outcry from the most recent new achievement).
I don't think reason is really a thing either...staff have a ton of things to do and think about and add in on a schedule. I think what would make it easier for staff to add in achievements would be better planning on their end. I'm not sure how they do the behind the scenes stuff - but if they don't already do this, they need one person who has achievements on their "plate." Additionally Keith has said they don't want to encourage "hoarding" and yet most achievements do this in one way or another. They need to come up with a whole new kind of achievement, rather than a new way to reward achievements. Right now I strongly suspect the block to adding achievements is twofold, one, they just don't think of it, and second when they do think of it, they don't know what to add (as in something that won't reward hoarding).
As for , I don't really understand what you're getting at or how a points system would achieve it.
I definitely support a system where there is some way to earn another copy of the prizes - especially multi-use items, but there are many ways to accomplish this without having a points system.
Finally: We already have too many currencies! I don't care whether you call it points, coins, tokens, etc, its essentially a new currency.
