It’s been a really bad week.

My landlord sold my apartment building and the new owners took over Monday. We had a meeting (I have panic disorder so you can only imagine how that went) and a new lease agreement will be in place next month. My new rent will be more than double what I’m paying now. I have no where to go and I’d rather live on the street than go back home. I cried all week.

I can’t find a new place because I can’t afford it. The rent in my city has tripled because of the pandemic (price gouging). I’ve lived in my current apartment for 11 years. This is all I know.

Yikes! Is there no rent control advocacy where you live? Perhaps a housing agency that you could turn to for some help? If you are a member of a church, most have outreach programs to help folks in your situation. Panic attacks make it super difficult, but there are people who care. Good luck.

I do believe they -CAN'T- raise the rent on a badly damaged apartment, the bathroom damages was never properly repaired right? This also means your brothers unit is still damaged too if I remember your older posts. Also double check your states rent allowances in terms of what it can be raised by. Also if your lease was active I'm fairly positive it can't get raised until a lease renewal despite the fact the old owner sold. Selling with active leases is legal, but usually its NOT legal to change an active lease as it is considered a contract and contracts must be seen to the end of agreed terms. So research your heart out and enlist your brothers help too because he still lives in the unit below if I remembered right? I'm lucky that my state only allows it to go up by a % of previous rent, the state next to me is not so lucky. Places that went for 900 (talking 2 bed 2 bath small homes with a little yard) are now 2400! Most 3 bed apartments are 1200 minimum. Its insane rents all over have jumped so drastically. Would sharing a space with your brother be a viable choice if you guys moved? Or is he gonna head back home?

Also I agree find any community outreaches. If you have a Goodwill reach out to them too, they don't advertise it but they DO offer help per situation.

I have checked. I had a free 30min phone exploration with a lawyer and because it's a new owner, it's legal that they can draft up a new lease. Unfortunately because I'm only on a month-to-month lease (my slumlord never bothered to write a yearly lease renewal), the new lease terminates mine. There's nothing I can do about it. Landlords have figured out the way around the rent freeze in Ontario and that is--draft a new lease, increase the rent.

My brother will be moving in with my grandma (she didn't want me) when she buys a house and I'm on my own. If I really have to, I can move in with my parents but I was already told by my mom that I'm not allowed to shower daily.

I've also reached out my rental subsidy and they're waiting to hear back and will call me when they get some info.
