Hello ! I hope you are all having a lovely weekend so far. Mine has been cold and gross, so I mostly worked on tickets and this!
First and foremost, the results of the poll. As most of you probably expected, continue to allow foreign words in CW names won by a landslide. The results of the poll are below:
SPOILER (click to toggle)
This means for the most part, things will continue on as they always have. Because it is essentially impossible to provide a list of allowed words and phrases, however, here are few guidelines to keep in mind when naming your items:
• Words that are commonly used in English because there is no true English equivalent are generally okay (ie: taco, kimono, typhoon, cafe, kindergarten, etc).
• Words and phrases that are often used in pop culture and have found their way into much of mainstream media are generally okay (ie: kawaii, carpe diem, je ne sais quoi, etc).
• Words that are used to describe an item in another language (such as its shape, color, size, a number, etc) are more difficult to give a flat ruling to. There are a wide variety of words available in English to avoid calling something simply blue, large, fluffy, etc. If you feel like a foreign word fits the theme of your item better, you can mention it in your submission notes, along with the meaning of said word, but please note approval on these items will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
• Sentences or multiple words in foreign languages that are connected by conjunctions are not allowed. We want the names to be both understandable as well as grammatically correct when read in English, as this is Subeta's primary language.
• The number of foreign words in a name should be limited to ONE descriptor and ONE object (for example, a Kawaii Kimono), rather than being a long string of multiple foreign words.
• Any word found to be inappropriate or against site rules will not be allowed.
• Finally, and most importantly -- all of the above is subject to staff review and approval. There is no guarantee that any item submitted with foreign words in its name will be accepted or denied. If your item is denied because of its name, you can either resubmit the item with a new name, or you can file a ticket to discuss this and see if any exception is possible.
I know in the end there is STILL a lot of grey area for this particular topic, and a lot of it seems up to individual interpretation and even rather subjective. I think in the end, that's really the only way this type of rule can work! I'm confident that going forward, we'll all be able to work with this rule as-is and continue to have fun and fitting names for custom wearables.
Finally! I want you guys to know I heard your feedback from the previous thread, and in the future if a poll of any sort is needed, I'll see about how to have one set up on-site. This was new territory for me, and I'm not sure if we'll need something like this in the future! But if we do, I'll definitely figure out how to make it work on the site itself :)
Thank you all!
Thank You! As a lover of, and wannabe maker of CW's, this seems to me to be a clear, easily understood, and sensible solution.
Thank you as well for listening to our feedback. That is especially appreciated.
not pinging, as I'm sure you get plenty of that already :)
Thank you!!!!! :)
Calendar days are closer than they appear! [item=mocking clock]
Thank you for the results and updated guidelines, Jessi. I'm happy that option 2 won and by such a significant amount.
Extremely happy to see how this poll went. Proud that the community overwhelmingly was for keeping foreign words :)
yay! i'm glad that this was reasonably solved, i think the new guidelines are great and clear up a lot ♥
Thank you. I think this is all for the best.
Cafe, typhoon, and kindergarten are technically not foreign words, however, they're English words of foreign origin. When the speakers of a language overwhelmingly decide to adopt a word from another language instead of coming up with their own word for the concept, that's a loan word, not a foreign word :)
