gunner is just giving me the "thank you for volunteering!" page.

I'm not sure what you're seeing on your end, but on your HA right now it looks like you're still wearing the Magical skin. You need to clear your skin in the Skins tab and then click the "wear" button to have it actually save your change.

If you've already done that, then I'm not sure. It is odd that you didn't get the sidebar event. Is it possible that you accidentally deleted it without noticing?

When I got my magical skin, it was available in the wardrobe before I got the event. I waited, and when I finally got the event several hours later, I cleared it in the skins tab and saved then. That worked for me.

you're right, i didn't save after i removed my skin. but it still doesn't change the fact that i didn't get a notif, which i'm honestly sure i did not delete accidentally.

Gunner gives me the same message Thanks for participating in the Volunteer Infection Program, but I have been waiting almost 2 days for the infection to start. No message the infection has started, removed old skin and saved and the Healer doesn't mention something strange.

Sounds like that's a different issue. Some of the older infections take a really long time to actually start unless you are bitten by zombies with the strain you want. You can use the NVLB Post and ping the group for bites you want. You should get the infection faster that way.
