So, considering we now have non-unique pet names, I was wondering... would it be possible for us to submit requests for deceased users to have their pet names "restored," so to speak? For example, the case one of my friend , her pet would be Anna again instead of Anna_807_189_289. I'm not too worried about the "legacy names" at all, but since the profile gets memorialized, maybe it would might be nice to be able to submit requests? I'm not sure how practical this would be for staff time and how many memorialized users there might be on the site, but I thought it might be worth suggesting!
That would make sense - it's easy to know what kind of petname they'd have, because it just adds _numbers

I'd love to see my friend's profile without all those numbered pets.

This suggestion makes me queasy. There has to be limit to what the virtual equivalent of an urn/gravestone is.
I totally get wanting rememberance for your friends, but you are now stealing by taking away the legacy names of their pets and not their username away from other users who claimed those legacy names legitmately. If you remember your friend, you remember your friend. Not their house, their job, their airspace, the kitty they owned and didn't take care of so it died when they were five long before you met, or every city they have ever lived in.
specifically said she does not care about the legacy names. If their display names can be changed to the original, this would not affect other pets who have the same names.
As stated, It's literately just "cleaning up" the profile to not have pets named Anna_807_189_289 but switching it to Anna, using the non-unique name system. It has nothing to do with legacy names whatsoever, other than the pet can have the legacy name Anna_807_189_289 or none at all, I don't think anyone cares about that... it just seems less work for staff to just keep the legacy names of these pets with the underscores and numbers rather than going through the effort to remove them too.
Also, considering the users on the website can be from anywhere sometimes the memorial page is all we have as a "virtual urn." Staff has decided that having the memorial pages as a thing has been acceptable for years... why not keep it updated with new site features?
What is on the user profile should represent the choices of the user when they were living, not what the site decided for them
Legacy names are not shown on the user profile, so they shouldn't be touched - but actual display names should be changed.
I have no horse in this race, as none of my friends still use Subeta, but I still fully support this. It would be a nice gesture for sure.
I think Sopheroo said it best with
Yes please, I see no reason not to do this and it'd be a good way to honor them past what we previously did.
I wholeheartedly support this. My reasons already have been said above.

I am also fully in favor of this. Those numbers grate on me just as much as I am sure that they would have on the original pet owners.
Love this suggestion. Maybe I'm missing something here, but is there a reason you'd want to submit a request first, rather than just having us automatically restore ALL of those pet names to their former glory? We could really do it automatically, and I can't see how that would be an issue - seeing as that would just put the pet names back to the way they were when the user was still with us. I'm not sure why anyone would want to keep the version with numbers at the end.

Not OP, but they might have assumed it wasn't possible to go and change the names in one fell swoop, but if it is possible, that 100% should be the solution.
