It's been brought up that the new Subeta layout will not be able to utilize custom CSS ">"because of how it is written." This is rather alarming to myself and others like me who heavily rely on Custom CSS to make the Subeta website work for them, whether it's for QoL things that are too low-priority for Subeta, or to accommodate disabilities, or for any other reason.

Ideally, Subeta would find a way to keep the custom CSS, but if that's really not possible then I'm hoping that some things may have options built into them to help users out who need them.

Feel free to respond to this thread however you want to in regard to the lack of custom CSS, but please, please, if you use Custom CSS now for any reason, share what you use it for. Let's let Subeta know what we need.

I use custom CSS for a lot of things, but the things I find most useful from it is removing the Cash Shop Hustler banner, moving the buttons for the Mystery Box and the Slots so that I don't have to keep scrolling down on each page load, and removing the news post banner so that I don't have new pet colours spoiled for me before I see the news posts with them in (that last one seems a bit silly, but I got anxiety from having to refresh the news all day to make sure I would see the pet colour before the banner spoiled which pet and colour it was).

If the new layout makes sure you don't have to scroll down to click on the buttons for the Mystery Box and Slots, and if it comes with the option to toggle the Hustler and news banners, that would be good. Or even the option to still display the news banners but to not show the title of the news post, like how it used to be, if that's possible.

One of the first things I did upon returning to Subeta was ask on the forums, "Is there a custom CSS for changing the link colors, cuz I can't tell what's a link or not!" I know that's not the biggest issue a site has to worry about but it really helps, especially on mobile, where I don't want to be zooming in every time I just want to find the one link in a block of text.

I also use the CSS to make event floaters stay in the corner. It's pretty easy for me in general to skip over things with my eyes (processing ftw) and I often find myself reading the same thing over and over again, so both the links thing and the floaters thing keep me from getting too frustrated at staring at the page for 30 seconds going "OK now am I reeeeally sure there's nothing to click here?"

I do love using the Custom CSS... however, I mainly use it for certain QoL things. If the new layout accounts for these things I'd be happy. Agree I use it to remove the CS Hustler alert, to move my floating things to the corning, to remove one of the Training return links.. god knows what else.

However I do like being able to customise the site to our own liking...

I only have a few custom CSS bits, but I really rely on them with the way I use the site. (I used to have fully custom banners and buttons but I got lazy about maintaining them and finally dropped them.)

Currently, I use: floating items to the top corner; give floating items a drop shadow; heaps of improvements to make the 'bookmarks' feature usable (which I use all the time as easy navigation to parts of the site I often use); hide pet images on the training page; hide some training options (ie strength) from being visible on my pet training dropdown list.

As with everyone else, I'd be happy if the pages on the new site were more customizable and/or some of the general usability of some features (like if there was a good replacement for the bookmarks!) was improved instead of having to use custom CSS for those things.

I forgot about the floating items. I use it to move those too. Then again, I heard they want to phase out floating items, so they might change the way those items are given out anyway.

Useful Custom CSS Builder

Personally:

  • Pretty space theme ❤ (by FallenSamurai)
  • Moving floating items
  • Removing the Hustler banner
  • Hiding the ads on top of adblock because not doing so makes the page jump
  • Removing the footer
  • Removing/resizing/moving various images and buttons (shopkeepers, game buttons, ping friends, ...)
  • Pet roles (reader, battler, etc.)
  • Making the wishlist borders easier to see

I’m currently using this wonderful feature to:

  • make the layout non-overwhelming (removed header, muted colours, reduced the drop down menu to only have commerce > shops and personal > pets)
  • hide Hustler, auto training link and the link to deny dance requests
  • make the ’Read to’ links bigger and bolder for the pets I’m currently reading to because shaky hands and a touch screen is a horrible combination

I use it to make Subeta dark mode with the Shengui Guo theme (though that's kind of an issue on mobile bc I use my phone in grayscale and it's TOO dark then lol) and for having floating items be in the upper left hand corner.

I do kind of wonder if we can implement CSS like the floating item thing in our browser, have it interact with the page, and still act like it does now.

wow, i use it for so much stuff...

  • move floating items+dropshadow
  • hide hustler banner
  • bigger item hover text
  • more visible wl item borders
  • dual sidebars (so i can see events on one side of the page and the sidebar on the other)
  • an overhaul of the notepad widget (i need to find the topics where i got all this tbh because that description doesn't do it justice)
  • just a bunch of different sidebar widget tweaks (don't wanna list every little one)
  • resizing shopkeeper images and item images in shops to be smaller (just a little bit)
  • pet roles for gourmand and reader

and i simply enjoy being able to customize the site to my liking and making things easier to see/read. i always thought that was really unique and helpful for a petsite. i didn't know customCSS was going to go away... :C

:/ CustomCSS is honestly one of the huge upsides of Subeta. If you weren't happy with the existing layouts, you could make your own and tweak it as you saw fit. I made my own cobbled together "lite" layout b/c I didn't need the ginormous picture up top wasting space.

It has also been used for easier accessibility (green & red buttons with white text are not always a great design choice, neither is the site clock being tiny and barely legible). Or even to fix issues that are too small to bother the programmers with (currently, mobile layout dropdowns, or even the speed of the dropdowns on the desktop layout).

On one hand, I understand that it's a pain in the ass from a programming point of view. But as a user, I'd be really sad and disappointed if there wasn't a way to better customize the site to suit you and your needs.

The same goes for the sidebar. I understand wanting to make subeta all modern and fancy and all up-to-date design-wise but there's definitely a charm to the whole retro layout. Modern site designs feel so sterile and lifeless a lot of the time.

I don't know if there's a browser plugin or something that could be used as a replacement for customCSS, but if there is, it'd be cool to inform the userbase about it if the programmers decide that customCSS as a site feature has to go.

Hide autotraining- There's no amount of warnings that are going to stop me from autopiloting through to an unintended/unwanted autotraining session. Warnings are used liberally around the site, which is not actually a bad thing in and of itself, but creates warning fatigue and pretty much just trains users to click through no matter that they say. They don't reach the thinky-think parts of my brain when I'm paying attention, let alone at 3am when I'm not. This isn't a problem unique to Subeta, and there isn't really a solution.

Hiding forum images- Makes the forums readable.

  • Contrast for ease of reading. Reason: I have amblyopia with my left eye, meaning I'm visually impaired. I won't say severely because my glasses can tip the scales into my favor but I still get gray blobs in between letters sometimes as a symptom. Subeta's color contrast in cases are very difficult for me to read if it's on a light background. Light backgrounds make things blur even worse for me. The lighter borders for WL items? Forget it. I can't see it.

  • Floating items to top left corner. Reason: I'm not scrolling hither and yon for the sake of there might be an event item floating someplace on a massive page. While it's "fun" for some to do so, I find it tedious and annoying.

"Because of how it's written" is basically a really lazy, lazy excuse. Make the site more readily accessible for those visually impaired like myself and those more severely. You are essentially rebuilding it from the ground up anyways.

I have CSS for floaties, better WL items border, keeping my bookmarks the same on each page instead of jumping all over, hiding forum images cause honestly they're too much and picking site font type and size cause normal one is rather ugly.

A lot of these I feel I wouldn't need on the new subeta if it was, well, better. Bookmarks just should have reliable look without user intervention. Thin WL line on a site that's mostly white? Cool idea... But the night mode icon in the new page gives me a little hope. Forum images and signatures should be merged, imo. Etc. The only thing I understand not becoming a thing are floaties cause it's making it too easy I guess. But I usually play subeta as a second or third activity at the same time and I can't pay 100% attention so I'll just blame my game style here.

I didn't know they were planning to remove it as a feature. Why removing it if it's to make a better site? I've been using CSS for a few things such as moving floating items to the top corner, removing the annoying Hustler banner, removing and resizing images and buttons (shopkeepers, game buttons, ping friends, autotraining ...). I feel like if these things are added to the site, without CSS ... That's a start.

That's about right. If the new site is not ready to be rolled-out, then just wait. I feel like we've been shoved changes quickly and a lot of things were not as ready as we were hoping for.

I pretty much just use a floating item code and some leviathan game fixes I once made for someone, on top of my night mode hah

if you PM me how the site looks on your phone I could try to swap around some colors?

I use CustomCSS for so many things! To make it so I don't have to scroll as much and to reduce clicks - really helps with my carpal tunnel.

I use it to customize colors and make things more visible. Technically, I'm not visually impaired, but I have several vision problems, which combined cause a fair bit of problems. For example, the box around wishlist items is simply invisible to me, without CSS its completely useless.

Nightmode triggers my migraines, and yet bright white backgrounds cause unspecified pain in my eyes. So I need CSS to reduce the whiteness, while not making it dark enough to trigger a migraine.

I have CSS to reduce the size of some graphics while increasing the size of some text.

Some quirks and personal things, like highlighting certain users shops, or removing information that I don't want to see.

Bookmark fixes. Floaters. Removing postcards and the hustler banner. And more.

I have a lot of custom CSS laughs

  • font style and size (particular fonts are easier on my eyes, so I just set Subeta to use my favourite rather than the site defaults), including in the sidebar and text entry boxes and removal of bold in some links (like the kissing ones from Survival)
  • pet roles (to hide my non reader and non gourmand pets from the reading / feeding menus.... essential when you have over 100 pets! :P)
  • adding a grid to Leviathan
  • news box font size & new news header size
  • increasing the font size of the clock
  • floating the clock (so I can keep track of Subeta time if I'm on forums or some other page where I'm scrolled a long way down)
  • removing the coloured daily support goal bar
  • thicker and different coloured border on wishlist items
  • floating items (like pumpkins) set to the top left corner

Most of it is purely to make Subeta a lot more comfortable to use, as I find certain combinations of colours / fonts (particularly high contrast) are more troublesome than others, and being able to change those elements has meant I spend a lot more time on Subeta than I do anywhere else!

Absolutely nailed it here. Custom CSS is a good, good thing that gives users the ability to make the site accessible--whether it's adding little QoL elements or accommodations for a disability. That, paired with communicative staff and CSS-savvy users, can make what could be an unusable site for a person with a disability into something accessible.

Custom CSS is an elegant solution, too: we know there are users with disabilities who use the site, and the site should accommodate those users. If custom CSS weren't a thing, programmers would have to work with users with disabilities and program options gradually and slowly--and that's assuming that it would even be a priority, given Subeta's tight budget.

By letting users DIY their accommodations, it saves time, doesn't require staff involvement, and allows people to change the site exactly how they want to, rather than settle for something that's better, but perhaps not perfect.

I didn't read through to see if these were mentioned already but the main thing I use CSS for is changing the background color of the site. Big chunks of white space hurt my eyes, but dark modes are almost always just as bad because light text on a dark background often hurts my eyes too. I've tried non-CSS workarounds, and they're not ideal for me.

I also have a myriad of smaller QoL things, like font size, hiding the sidebar toggle button so I don't close it by accident, changing the "Add to WL button" back to the little + in the corner, hiding my non-gourmand pets from the feed list on items. In all honesty, I could still play without most of the smaller things, but I do appreciate being able to have them
