I love the legacy pet name feature, I'm just sad that any new pets we make can't have them, but we can wipe them from older pets that do.

I wish new pets could have legacy names if the legacy name doesn't already exist.

Legacy pets are more of a trophy for people who dealt with clearings, and spent lots of money changing names in the first fifteen years of the site.

I mean, sure? But that's not all they are to everyone. I'm sure plenty of users feel that way, and it's a good way to appease those of us who spent a lot of money on that(myself included), but it doesn't mean others don't feel similarly to me. I'm just not as excited about pet IDs and a major draw of this site for me has been unique pet names. It's still disappointing that any future pets I make won't have that, and it makes me reluctant to make new ones because of it. I feel like new pets would be getting the short end of the stick, where my older pets have something they don't. I know they're just code, but I also know other people have similar empathy and sentimentality for their pets.

In any case, I don't expect staff to change the system, which is why this is really just me airing out a wish. Posting it is better than not. They can ignore this and that's just fine, but on the off chance I share a sentiment they haven't considered, it's worth posting.

Others do feel similar to you:

Post-update Legacy names Non-unique pet names (The second is a general feedback thread, with a lot of mixed opinions.)

I think this is the first post that's been made in the suggestion forum, though.

If you want it to gain more traction, I would recommend changing the title to something more to the point. Right now the title doesn't tell anyone what you are wishing for. :)

Quoting my reply to the feedback post:

Quote
As long as any cleared legacy names that existed before July 27th cannot be reclaimed, I&;m kinda OK with this (but not keen). However, I don&;t know if it&;s still possible to track what those names are.

Furthermore I got the impression that site doesn&;t want to make legacy names the center of attention again, and only want them to serve as a transition tool to help users adapt to the non-unique name system. Eventually the goal seems to be almost completely phasing out the unique name system by drawing the least amount of attention to legacy names. I could be completely wrong though.

In the original site feedback thread talking about legacy names, this was a suggestion that was mentioned but staff response was that any new names wouldn't have a legacy designation because of wanting to draw attention away from the previous unique naming system.

Yes, I would prefer that if I were to get a new pet and assign it a name that's never been used that it had a legacy designation especially, in light of the fact that I personally was very much against the doing away of the unique naming system in the first place, but I don't expect staff to change their mind. It's pretty much a done and to me absolute deal that the legacy designation will only apply to past unique names for now and in the for-seeable future.

I support this big time!

I'm old and a long time user - that's my excuse. I DID rename a pet the other day, but I chose a non-existent name and it goes with it's legacy name "title".

I will definitely never create a new pet any more, only seek out good legacy named pets to adopt, because to me non legacy names are worth zero.

Unfortunately this a Necro as the last post prior was in 2020. Feel free to make a new board about this suggestion.
