As the title says, but specifically regarding what the overlay looks like. I've read the rules page for it, but it's pretty sparse and vague- does it mean that, as long as it's a full-body quad/anthro, I can literally upload anything? Like if it's a snake overlay but I use it on a wyllop, for instance. As for style choice, are there any examples of something that has been rejected? I've seen someone with a very sketchy, crayon-y style for their overlay, which is pretty different from Subeta's style, so I can't imagine what would be denied. Also, not related to rules, but how long does it roughly take for an overlay to be approved?

One of the rules that is in the general section but not on the custom overlay page for some reason says this:

Quote
You are allowed to use a custom image representing your pet to overlay on the original pet image as long as the pet&;s name, true color, species, gender, and owner are still visible and not misrepresented in any way. Misrepresenting any details -- including stats -- is not allowed. In short, overlays are okay as long as textual details are not covered, and current, unaltered official art is not used. These same rules apply to minion and treasure chest overlays as well.
Based on this, having an overlay that looks like a serpenth and putting it on a wyllop would be a big no-no because you would be misrepresenting what you actually own. If it was a snake that looked absolutely nothing like a serpenth, that may be entering into a gray area but it would raise a few eyebrows. Why would you put it on a rat-like creature when you could easily change the pet into a serpenth and not have to worry about bending the rules? If that is something you really wanted to do, however, I would recommend creating a ticket for it.

Keep in mind uploading a custom overlay is separate from assigning a custom overlay. Once your overlay is approved, it remains available to you to assign and reassign to any pet at your leisure.

As for style choice, are there any examples of something that has been rejected?

I don't think I have anything like that, but all my overlays have been recolors or minor tweaks to official Subeta art. I do think this applies here though:

Quote
Style choice is completely up to you. Overlays do not need to be Subeta quality and detail, but these pets are still in some way representing the site so we reserve the right to deny an overlay for any reason not listed above.
The only time I had an overlay denied was when there was a minion in the picture. I was given a free credit so that I could upload a different picture instead.

how long does it roughly take for an overlay to be approved?

It really depends on the availability of the approvers. I think the longest time for me took about 9 days? But usually it's within 1-3 days. Sometimes if you're lucky it could be that same day.

Thank you so much for the reply! I didn't actually want to use the snake idea, it was just an extreme example, haha. I have seen people with overlays that looked like a realistic animal rather than a subeta pet, though. That rule you quoted was very helpful, though! Can I get a link to where it's written? I feel like that rule sounds as if it's for using CSS as an overlay for your profile, though, rather than being the actual overlay feature for pets, since it mentions treasure/minion overlays.

Does this mean that you don't actually have to specify which pet you will be assigning the overlay to? So once it's approved, if the pet you assign it to happens to break the rules (like the snake/wyllop example), what will happen? Will the overlay be deleted entirely, or just removed from the pet, but you are still allowed to assign it to a different pet?

I provided the link in that post, but I know sometimes it's hard to see linked words on these forums. Here it is fully: https://subeta.net/help/rules.php?act=rule&id=59

Also, that rule would be for everything. That's why it's in general rather than on the custom overlay page. A general rule will apply everywhere, but a custom overlay rule will only apply to custom overlays. For instance, you can have an overlay bigger than 200x200 with CSS and that would be okay, but you wouldn't be able to upload it as a custom overlay.

Does this mean that you don't actually have to specify which pet you will be assigning the overlay to?

In cases where it is obvious, probably not. I used to be very detailed in my "Additional Information", but lately I've stuck to more basic facts and have been approved anyway. But also keep in mind the following at the bottom of the custom overlay upload page:
If your character is original, please let us know what species of Subeta pet it is, or which pet you will be using it for, so we can avoid misrepresentation.
As for your last two questions, I don't know. That's not something I wanted to risk finding out. I'd definitely advise creating a ticket if you really want to know. I suppose it's possible to accidentally have a disparity if you zap the wrong pet and they change species and you don't realize it. It would be much more difficult to accidentally assign the overlay to the wrong pet, because there is an "are you sure?" page that shows you both pet pictures at the same time.
