On July 26, 2020, Subeta implemented non-unique pet names. Some people were not in favor of this, so to ease the transition, all pets created before this change were given a "legacy name". What this means is that the pet had the name when names were still unique and could only belong to one pet at a time.

Any pets created after the change do not have legacy names. Also, if you change your pet's actual name, the legacy name does not change. Legacy names are permanent and unchangeable, unless you go to the cleansing pool and delete it forever.

You can read a lot more about it in the FAQ I accumulated below, but I'm happy to answer any questions too!

Also, if you're interested in obtaining more legacy names, there is a legacy hashtag group for available adoptions.

Welcome back! We recently did away with "unique" pet names, so anyone can use any pet name they want! A legacy name is a pet's original name, or the name it had at the time we changed naming systems. You can change an older pet's display name to whatever you want, but its legacy name remains the same (handy if you want some bragging rights for having the "original" whatever). :) The cleansing pools removes the legacy name, handy if the legacy name wasn't that great and all you care about is the display name. I hope that clears it up a bit!

[edit] Whoops, guess I'm running a bit slow today.

Totally makes sense, and thank you for the warm welcome!

Thank you!

1 question though, for the adopt r us there are pets in there with just a "name" then there are pets that say "legacy followed by a name" does that just mean that the ones with just the "name" were made after this took effect?

The ones that say LEGACY followed by a name only say that because a user changed their actual name to say that. This is because the pound does not differentiate between pets who have legacy names and who don't, so some users are making it easier for their fellow legacy-name seekers to know if a pet in the pound has a legacy name or not.

[Edit]Also, if you look at IDs, anything after 5996000 is definitely not going to have a legacy name, because they were all created after the change. With IDs before then, it's a bit hit or miss.
