Picture Mackenzi. New names are announced- Mackenzi is so psyched! One new pet will be made asap and there are several others planned for name changes!

The one name change per pet per month rule is clarified- oh my goodness, that's a lot of name change opportunities. Mackenzi clicks on the pets page. Mackenzi realizes that 66 pets is a lot of pets. Mackenzi realizes that a good 30 of those pets where based on random name finds and she's not so attached to the names or simply doesn't have ideas for characters even if the name is really great.

Mackenzi realizes she's gonna have 30+ pets to rethink, retool, reimagine, and possibly just get rid of. Mackenzi realizes she's looking into the bottomless abyss of pet name opportunities. Mackenzi realizes she has a lot of work to do. xD

It's not really a bad thing- "When written in Chinese, the word crisis is composed of two characters- one represents danger, and one represents opportunity." My entire pet group is about to get a shake-up, but that all of my pets have a legacy name option is an extended opportunity for pet customization. While there's a lot of my previous work I'm ready to throw in the bin it's also very exciting! New doors of creativity are opening up!

Anyone else go thru a similar process? Did you just go clean slate and abandon pets or are you gonna go one by one and rename/rework them?

In a word: [sup]YES[/sup]

I had almost 70 pets Before the Change, and like you after the change I felt a bit overwhelmed and lost.

I decided that to take control of the situation, I needed to start over. I got rid of my pets with the weakest, least developed characters. Then I decided I needed some sort of boundary since names were no longer an obstacle, and I kept only the pets who have October birthdays and vowed only to adopt pets with October birthdays here on out.

I currently have 25 pets, and three of those are just waiting to go to different owners.

Once I decided who I was keeping, I wiped the slate clean on almost all of them. Everyone was renamed a generic name (which will be streamlined come August) and turned into a montre. I even wiped all their legacy names. I didn't want anything to unduly influence me for their future selves. The only ones I didn't wipe were Catricia, Heidy, and Coax, who are all pets I've had for a long time, and Catricia and Heidy are named after myself and my cat, respectively. Coax I've decided will become my first developed character, since her story was one of the more developed ones anyway.

After all that gutting, I felt really peaceful about it and ready to start fresh. I've always had a big imagination and I used names to help me develop characters, but then I never went anywhere with them. It's almost like all my creativity was used up just on making their name fit their character, and then I got overwhelmed and didn't write their stories. Now I get to subvert that. I get to start with the story and decide after what to name the character and how they will look so that they fit with the story.

I'm really excited at the prospect of actually finishing some pets and possibly winning some spotlights!

The past is written, but the future is left for us to write. ~ Picard

Your posting made me smile, it's written in such a cute style and yeah I can relate kinda.

Adopting some not exactly needed Pets out for the legacy names sadly doesn't go well with low ID obsession so I will stick to renaming

First of all I LOVE the thought of every pet having an October birthday, that is fantastic! The blank slate method sounds so cathartic.

Wow, I never thought about it like this but you're bringing up such a good point. The names where definitely the first and foremost in my mind before this change- for a handful of pets this worked really well, and a few of them I got past it because they were the first pets on my account which meant their names didn't matter. But that left a lot of pets where I loved a name and had to create a character around the name instead of creating a character. Worked for some, definitely felt like a creative block for others.

:D Yeah, that "just because I could" feeling lingers over many of my acquisitions... I am enjoying the double name feature more than I thought I would though, and I might try to just adopt legacy names if I can help it. Of course, I will eventually come up with some idea for a blank slate pet whose lack of a legacy name will be part of their story, I am very bad at keeping my collections to one strict rule. P:

But even with non-unique names, it's cool we have these other qualifiers we can still collect for like ID and legacy names to further curate our massive pet hoards. I like seeing people who work around a "rule" like that, their pets are fun to browse.

I have a list of "wanted" names, but I am mostly sitting here, staring at my Pets to rename and think that I have to hide the Legacy Name then, it doesn't fit the character and if someone searches by the 'old' Pet link and finds the "Legacy Pet" they see that the name is completely different and not fitting and waaah.

This makes sense hopefully. XD

I gotta find a way to ignore the fact, or maybe just throw them in the Cleansing Pool or the Pound. :') Just to start fresh and unburdened.

Some will keep their Legacy Names tho, cuz they still fit them. :'D

I might be starting to...if adopting a pet with a certain legacy name counts as a crisis.

See, I'm thinking of adopting a pet with a Pokemon legacy name. I plan to change the "official" name to something else, but I'll honor the legacy name by having that Pokemon appear in the pet's story.

I MIGHT do it with other video game/TV shows I like, but Pokemon is the main focus now. 😆

Ah ha, yes I totally feel the crisis (Wei Ji)! I'm kinda overwhelmed and excited at the same time.

Also, this has nothing to do with the non-unique name system, but for the past six months or so, I've been debating if I want to throw out all my OCs and work on fan pets only. Without the non-unique name system, I just have a whole bunch of "good" names that I grabbed for potential OCs, but then they became meaningless about a month ago when I was certain that I only wanted fan pets from then on. So the non-unique name change really came in and saved it all for me.

The first wave of name changes was for existing fan pets with RW names. The second wave is gonna be for my OCs who shall be recycled into fan pets. I gotta admit that it's rather hard to re-plan for 40% of my pets (while I did abandon about 15% of my pets with high IDs since I'm not worried about legacy names, especially RNs that aren't my fan pet names). It's even trickier when I take their pet age in to consideration (eg. characters in the same fandom has to have their age correctly, like the older character needs to have a lower ID than the younger character).

Also I had to dig my old word files to find abandoned old fan pets for ideas, as well as going through my fandom tumblr to see if I've forgotten any important characters xD. I barely settled plans for less than 50% of my pets (the ones on my profile). 50% more to go!

I've been digging through old character files myself and omg some of them were so terrible. I can't believe I actuall HAD these characters on Subeta. Not that their characters were bad, their profile texts were. x'D (OK I lied. Most of them WERE terrible actually.... ehem)

throws herself ashamed into a dark corner XD

On a side note, I got inspired to change a few names to older OCs (Heiko), or Roman Empire themed characters (Glabrus, Britannicus - WHY ON EARTH did I not get them back before? I think I just forgot about them....which is sad, because especially Glabrus was my BB xD), found my old stories of these two, and of Claudius and Catullus... which I will rework a bit to make them more 2020 and not 2010 in broken 4th class English... but you get the idea. :D

There are still characters I want to bring back from "the graveyard" called old files, but I just can't make up my mind which Pet to rename. shrug

It feels like there are TOO MANY options now and I'm in the crisis of being overwhelmed with the feeling that I can get everything now..... EVERYTHING. Maybe I just need to digest that Subeta is now a better place for Pet character development, because everyone can have everything now, Before my brain goes POOOOF over thinking about all the possibilities,,,,, xD

I was so excited and I still am. I've shifted around some pet names and what not I let some go because it's my fault I got too excited for my own good. For the most part though the names I have... I'm very happy with and I can't wait to do more work on them. I'm leaving some spaces open so if more ideas come I'll have space and won't feel the need to change names unless I absolutely have to.

I haven't made any changes yet - I don't think the change is going to affect my "legacy" pets because I'm pretty happy with all of them. Instead, I feel like I have a lot of freedom going forward with new pets I want to create. I have so many unfinished legacy pets though, I feel like I need to work on them before I start on any new ideas ^X^;

When it was first announced... I went straight into crisis mode... Mostly because I had just decided - only hours before - that I really need to step away for a few days 'cause real life was kicking my butt.

Otherwise, it hasn't been that bad. I had already started planning, based on around the possibilities presented on the Suggestion topic. Of course, I couldn't plan for every eventuality but... I knew was going to be keeping most of my names. I've been really lucky to have been able to get so many names that I either loved from the get-go or had really fallen in love with along the way. For the rest, I knew it was gonna depend on what they did about legacy names... If they had said "here's your acknowledgement but you'll lose it if you change the name", I probably would have let go of a few more pets than I plan to now... However, with my "7 Sinners" for example, I would have kept them and they just would have stayed the same... I am so happy that not only do I get to keep the "replacement" names I had fallen in love with, but now the outward presentation of my inspiration is much more obvious.

I also knew that if pets were marked legacy, I was gonna struggle with the idea of having "legacy" mixed with "new"... That part has been less of a headache than I imagined, though I am indeed separating my sets into three categories - legacy, renamed, or new... I'm just finding it a lot easier to be okay with stand-alone pets now that I can really zero in on their idea without worrying I'm eventually gonna need that pet to slot into a set as a replacement for a name I couldn't get.

To be honest I didn't have a real pet crysis but most names I have are names I really wanted. I never was that kind of person that took names cause they are good, without having an OC idea for it. I only changed 3 names of the pets I had. Two were Last names I had as alternative (like Krieger and Aurel) which the Legacy name now is a cool thing to match first name and last name and the other one was Zenturio, which is actually a rank the char has. The rest I kept and only adopted some pets from the pound to give them names I allways wanted and have OCs for, to keep them and give them a new home.

So far I've only changed one pet name. I had a brief wave of excitement that all those names I had originally wanted were available to me now, only to realize I had either forgotten the name I had wanted, or really wasn't interested in it anymore. Only one pet, with an obscure Latin name, ended up getting changed.
Lucifer may be a popular name, and will likely be much repeated, so I'm just going to have to work to make my profile the best of them all. Of course this will be problematic, as I don't know how to code.... So yeah, crisis time.

I have 5 pets that I'm willing to get rid of because I'm not attached to their legacy names or birthdays. I'll most likely adopt them out/pound them.

I have 3 pets with cool birthdays that I want to rename but I need to develop ideas for them.

I didn't/haven't gone through a pet crisis because I'm still kind of attached to the idea of owning legacy name pets, or the first pet of its name. That'll probably change though since I want to do something with my pets with Halloween and Valentine's birthdays.

I am definitely going to rename and revamp. Some of them have lower IDs and if I don't like their legacy name I can just clear it. It's not like I am going to be listing them on most pets anyway...

I have changed a few but the first was that I finally got my daughter's name. I am so over the moon about that!

I haven’t changed any but, I also never had plans to even if the system had been non-unique. I’m happy with the names I have, alternate spellings included. I've actually been less motivated to work on my pets, as unique names was one of those things that made me want to work on my pets.

I’m slowly working on existing pets, getting profiles for pets I already had in the works since I had plans for them anyway, and I’ve been sticking to just adopting legacy pets for new pets instead for now.

As a sidenote, yay for getting Zoe’s name, ;).

Thank you! I would spend every year (5 years) watching that name and then get upset when she signed in right before the year. This way both can have the name :D Beloved was a great name but I always wondered if it fit enough and now I get to rework her story and add to it!

And I of course understand missing unique names. I had 101 pets when things were changed and a lot were names I was very proud of. It is a big change but that ONE name made it worth it to me. And I don't care if there are 20102303450243545 Zoeys on the site. My Zoey is still unique.

I feel like I'm always having a pet crisis on who to work with and what to do with them haha. I may not rename many of my pets and will most likely create new ones for names I've been wanting for ages that have some type of idea/design for.

I think I'll still miss the name searching for inspiration/excitement and whatnot but it's also nice to have the freedom to go with anything I want. <3 Looking forward to getting more Greek/mythical names weheh.

Aren't we all haunted by our annoying self criticism xD! I'm glad you got some old OCs back though. BTW, congrats on the UN change!

As to myself, I know how shitty my OCs are more than anybody else. I just don't want them to see the light of day any more lol. I've cleared my pet profiles for probably 5 times in the past at different times, so it's inevitable that I would get to this point. Besides, OC names have never been really important to me, because I create OCs only for subeta, so I just go with whatever name I can grab and make my OCs fit that name. But fan/tribute pet names are another story.

I'm glad it's August 1st tomorrow, because how indecisive I am, I need to change a few pet names for a second time xD.

i wouldn't say 'crisis' but i did rename 12 pets so... make of that what you will?

i realised that i wasn't attached to some of my names at all; i'd been keeping them for fear of regretting it later or for nostalgic reasons (i've been here for over 12 years lol). other names i changed just for spelling purposes, and others still were just total 360s.

for me, the 'rethink, retool, reimagine' is less of a crisis and more of an opportunity at this point. i feel like i can explore and enjoy character design after a long time of just drifting away from that.

that said, when you have a lot of pets or even just a lot of ideas it can feel really overwhelming. where to begin? i'm just enjoying the freedom and embracing any inspiration that comes from it.
