I posted this on the non-unique-pet-name-topic, but since it was archived, I'm gonna create another topic for this.
I would also really appreciate if we could use letter which are not existing in the english alphabet, such as ä, ü, ö, ß, é, etc.
So for example I could create a pet with the name "Süßölgefäß" and don't have to replace the ü, ö, ä and ß by ue, oe, ae and ss. Not only "Suessoelgefaess" looks stupid, it's also another version of the problem we had before non-unique-names (example: Black, Black_1, Black_9120392, Blacky, etc)
Don't know if this is possible.
I have no idea how to type these letters which would make it difficult to search for a pet with these letters but I second this motion.
If our goal is more creativity we should have more letters. :)
Please my føreign æss is begging får this...
This is something that we can take a look at!
The biggest issue is that we route you to profiles via URLs, and in some cases browsers have issues with the characters but the last time we looked at this was years ago, and it's come a long way!

I would probably give up the ability of linking my pets via their names just to use non English letters/characters. Maybe a user can opt to only link their pets via IDs if special characters are used? And by non English letters, does it mean that we would possibly be allowed to use characters/letters from ALL languages? I recently discovered the joy of using fan pets' names in their native languages on Dappervolk, and I have to admit that it's cool!

Yes yes!!!
If we could additionally use Cyrillic letters, I'd be just fine never being able to link pets from their names again
Also giving my support to this! I'm in one of those Azerty countries with è à é ê as regular part of the alphabet.

This would be incredible if possible-- combined with the pet link by ID code idea I think this could be a fantastic addition to non-unique names while still being relatively easy to link to pets. (Even without the ID bbc option there's always linking by ID url, so this has my full, hopeful support regardless)
Since pets no longer need to have unique names, maybe it would be possible if unusual letters could be converted into standard dipthongs, so u-umlaut in the actual name could be transcribed to the URL as "ue".
The original reason special characters were taken out was because they literally broke the site when they were added to names. I.E. if I tried to access a pet's name url that had a special character in it, it'd break the pet's page and couldn't be accessed. So yeah, it was a security issue, but also, above all just a site functionality issue. Also, just noticed Keith posted about this already so yeah, all for this.
I would love this, too!
