I was looking at the taper items for some pet TCs and I noticed that they're all pretty cheap, except for . Why does it cost several millions when the other cost just a few thousand? Does it even actually sell for that price? They all seem to be retired, so that can't be it.
Not only is it retired, but according to Subetalodge it's from Morostide 2010, which means it was a holiday item available for only a limited time.
When an item is rare and more are not obtainable, you can only get them from other users' shops. As the cheaper ones are bought up, only the more expensive ones remain. Users are free to either buy it at that price or negotiate with the seller for a better deal.
Sometimes they re-release holiday items in later holidays to balance out the economy. I'm not sure if this item would qualify, but you could suggest it be something re-released next Morostide.
thanks! So the other tapers weren't released under the same situation? I understand how the system works but I was confused about why this one was worth more than its recolours.
Interesting...it does seem like the other tapers were released the same way. I wonder if the white one had some sort of special use to it, or if it is just rare because it looks more like a regular candle and therefore is more desirable?
Sometimes Subetalodge doesn't explain everything, unfortunately, and I don't remember way back then myself.
no problem! I'm just really intrigued now. I've wondered if maybe it's just that there's so few shops selling it that they can inflate the price but I have no idea.
These items are given out randomly. Sometimes some of the items don't go out as often, so you'll have 10K of the red, black, etc on site but only a handful of the white one. Or perhaps the recycle beast once asked for the white one, when it was cheap and people dumped a bunch of them. Then the few remaining were bought up gradually.
Or there could have been some other reason, or combination of reasons. Sadly there's no predicting why these price jumps happen.
Also, there are probably a bunch sitting around in people's vaults, old shops, etc who are no longer on site. Or, if they are still here never noticed the price so never bothered to offer them for sale. I have one in a pet TC and one sitting around in my garbage dump.

Are you sure these were random items? On Subetalodge it says "Morostide 2010: Holiday Shop item" and it actually has an official price, which makes me think that it was a purchasable item once upon a time.
ah...then it was probably a higher rarity item, so there would have been less available.

Retired items go out via RIft, so it seems like it would be possible to get it that way. Morostide ToT items go out with Carnival Games, so that probably won't work. HS items weren't just a matter of rarity it was kind of a restock war with everyone trying to get them just like happens nowadays with the Freyalise Trading Co. It's likely some folks still have them.
Have you tried asking in the Advertising section?
This item, a Holiday Shop item, is the sort of thing that would show up in the Crystal Shop. I would recommend posting it in the Items to Put Back in Circulation thread in Items Suggestions. Then start fragmentizing in case they do bring it back.
if you ever sell any at a price that isn't extremely high, let me know!
not only that, but the official price for the white version seems to be one of the lowest, so I'd imagine that combined with it being the most "candle-like" of these, it would end up being popular. I guess it's just a random fluke that led to this.
I haven't asked in Advertising section, because if people are really selling it for 86 million then I can't afford that at all. I did end up posting in the thread for items we'd like to see return, just in case. :)
