Hey subeta! I just launched my new website, BeingObscure.com, dedicated to reviews of movies, shows, books, manga.. Well, basically stuff I read or watch. To celebrate, I'll host a little giveaway party for about a week. What will happen: I'll gift as many people as i can, as long as they post here, in the morning (that's when i'm usually online). What you'll receive: WL items up to 2 mil sp.

RULES -no order, not mandatory, lol:

  1. make suggestions for stuff i should read/watch to review.
  2. ping friends!
  3. feel free to make suggestions of changes i should make to my site, to make it more appealing, i guess (i can't change the URL, but I can change other stuff)
  4. no posting = no gift, sorry :(
  5. Where do you want your gift? under the tree or through the gift center?

[edit] the party and giveaway will close now. If you manage to still post until a mod comes online, you'll still receive a gift ;) Thank you all who came and suggested something <3 Can't wait to celebrate with all of you next year ;)

I really have to update my blog ObscureJourney and my review site BeingObscure. French speakers can read my reviews here.

What a great idea. ^_^ I've got 3 Authors you might want to look at.

I've been reading some books by Cathy Glass - she fosters in UK and its her life stories. J.D. Robbs and her In Death series I rather like Seduction in Death, but any seem fine. The start of the series is Naked in Death- also the shortest. Edward Lee's Lucifer's Lottery is about a dude getting a tour of Hell. It's great as a stand alone, or even part of the series.

For movies Crawl n' Dr. Sleep + The Shining. ^_^

Glad to see you back around. Now for some Pings:

this great! I recommend reading in manga Pandora Hearts, Black Butler and Animal Land. As for books Where Are The Children, All Around The Town and A Cry In The Night by Mary Higgins Clark, Ghost Story, and Floating Dragon by Peter Straub, and The Talisman, Eyes Of The Dragon and The Gunslinger series by Stephen King.

Movies: I suggest doing reviews of both the IT miniseries and the movies that were released in theatres, and kind of compare them. Then review both the original Nightmare On Elm Street movie and the remake so you can compare them as well.

Some other movies to consider reviewing: Company Of Wolves, The Psychic, Death Stalks At Midnight, Whispering Corridors, Prom Night, Disturbing Behavior, The Faculty, Nausicaa, Valley Of The Wind, The Conquerer of Shambala (the FMA movie) and Trigun: Badlands Rumble

Friendly Pings: and

If you review kids/young adults, the Deltora Quest series is a cute one.

Maybe do like a side by side comparison of movies in a genre? Like the Disney Cinderella that just came out vs their Cinderella story film from like forever ago (Brandy!!!)

Gonna tag for this one. c:

Edit: Idc where you put the gift--this is just such a fun idea.

Merry Lumi! Congrats on the new site! Thanks for doing this <3 I’d love a gift box :> I checked out your website to be able to give you a few suggestions.

The home page needs something more. I’m thinking if you post the poster and link to your most recent review, that would help. Or somehow link the movie trailer if it’s a movie.

The links in the navigation bar on the top isn’t noticeable. Since it’s all in gray, I thought the other pages weren’t available yet. I only noticed cause I’m as curious as a kitten so I clicked to see if it would work.

I’d also change the orange and purple colors for the words. In my opinion, it’s best to leave it black and then give a small bold title to certain paragraphs to indicate a change. Or if you don’t like that idea, you can use italics.

I don’t remember which I clicked, but there was one without a rating at the end, so I’d be mindful with that.

Another thing would to update the name of ‘A’. I don’t know who ‘A’ is but it reads weird. I think because the way you write reviews is very personal, like reading your reviews is like talking to a friend but “then ‘A’ said this,” feels ...I don’t know... disconnected? I’d think it’d be better to upgrade ‘A’ to a full name, even though it may be made up for privacy reasons. Or you can just refer to them in how they are connected to you, “friend”, “mother”, “brother”, “girlfriend/boyfriend” etc.

My final suggestion is to think of having spoiler reviews, where you can go really in depth with your thoughts. I’d have a whole separate section for it, instead of just having it at the bottom of each review because sometimes your finger can slip.

Gosh you guys! thank you so much! <3 HUGE list of things to read and watch, but it's alright.

Adrelina, yes, i noticed the links were a bit wonky with the grayed color. my computer started acting up, so i couldn't fix that. but i do plan to do it. it was OK before i paid for the domain. I was wondering if i should put the whole name instead of 'a' or not. XD any other letter would have been maybe less confusing, maybe. but i did wonder if it sounds weird/disconnected. since i can't always separate myself from what i write (even when i re-read), i'm glad i asked here ;) HUGE thank you!

I would recommend The Hunger Games! Not sure if you've read or watched them, but both are good. Both series aren't incredible, and the books are better in my opinion, but I do think they are worth a watch/read. Also seconding Clannad! Such a great anime series. Anything by Studio Ghibli is also wonderful.

One thing I would change about the site are the navigation tabs. It's hard to tell they're even there (I didn't think there was anything beyond the welcome page at first, tbh). Maybe change the text or tab color? Otherwise great job and congrats on your website!

This is pretty cool! A few suggestions on stuff to review. For movies, Dr Sleep, Frozen 2, The Nun....to name a few. For TV Shows, Stranger Things, 911, Nancy Drew. Books ; Any by Ellen Hopkins. The "Gone" Series by Michael Grant.

I don't know much to be critical about web pages. and plus you've just made your site, it'll take time to make it look "professional" :P

Congratulations on your new website! It's a great feeling to be able to put your thoughts into the world, and I'm sure you (and us, your readers!!) will find great value in it ❤

Some books I would definitely recommend to read: If you like creepy stuff? A Collapse of Horses, an unsettling short story collection by Brian Evenson
If you like unique stuff? In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado is a memoir of a relationship told in a fascinating, fragmented way
If you like relationship stuff? Normal People by Sally Rooney is an excellent, troubling story about love -- if you can call it that

Some movies I would definitely recommend to watch: Parasite (Bong Joon-ho) social satire + unsettling + thriller/comedy Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach) drama + the aftermath of relationships + brilliant acting The Last Dragon (Michael Schultz) this movie is insane and i cannot explain it

Best of luck to you!! :D

  1. Stuff I like that leans more towards the Obscure (I know you dont focus on that, but also these things are cool and underappreciated): The Leagues and Legends trilogy by E. Jade Lomax (its free to download on their site! The first book is called Beanstalk and you should probably search by that, also they're just a really good author) Valhalla and the other books in the series by Ari Bach (the person behind the Facts i just made up tumblr! Warning, the book is incredibly violent and fairly graphic about that. Also the books after Valhalla will kick you in the emotional balls and curbstomp you while you cry, but if you want you can just read Valhalla and feel satisfied) The Last Unicorn, I spent a lot of time watching that as a kid and I loved it so much. TV Shows: Dead Like Me is criminally underwatched, its super funny and very good, if a little dark. Videogames if you can get into that: ILLBLEED for sega dreamcast (probably not accessible, still you might wanna watch a lets play of it, its so weird and funny) Okage Shadow King for PS2 (I spent so much of my childhood playing this game, it gets REAL interesting near the middle when it starts getting into meta storytelling themes, though honestly the whole thing is super interesting) Psychonauts for PC or xbox360(i think) is a bit of a cult classic. It's an incredibly well made game that holds up years after because the graphics are stylized rather than realistic. It's SO much fun.
  2. (thanks to !)
  3. The colors of the text for your titles and your block quotes are fairly challenging to read against the background, for different reasons. That deep saturated blue especially is a real challenge.
  4. I'm not sure what this rule means?
  5. I think gift center is better for gifts right now cause it means i can remove things from my wishlist and am less likely to get doubles of things C:

Congrats on the site! What a great idea, and I applaud you for taking idea to action (I struggle with that!)

  1. I mean, I think you should review things all over the map to reach the largest possible audience. Of course, sharing your preferences along the way is a great way for people to gauge your meter for lots of subjective things. Do you want to stick more to obscure or lesser-known things? I am a huge fan of the DiscWorld series by Terry Pratchett, and Gaiman's work such as The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Movie-wise Donnie Darko is a great one that always leaves people's opinions all over the map!
  2. I feel like this is right up your alley!
  3. Some of the color choices make it difficult to read - here is an interesting page about choosing colors.
  4. Under the tree please, I'm not very social here despite having been around for a long time so I like to participate in holiday giveaways so I end up with something to look forward to on Lumi.

Manga recommendations: Gokushufudou (The Way of the Househusband) - a comedy of an ex-yakuza being a house husband, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) - the story of a young pharmacist who gets sold as a slave to imperial harem and Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume's Book of Friends) - a troubled boy who can see spirits opening his heart to both ayakashi and humans around him. You can drop the gift under my tree (:

I actually watched Tokyo godfathers, i liked it, but i have to watch it again, to refresh my brain. plus the first time i couldnt pay attention 100% :D And thank you for the gift <3 i hope you'll like what i leave under your tree.

Not going to ping everyone, but i want to say that if (you check back here and) you didn't receive any gift box yet, you'll either have to wait a bit more -my time is generally limited. Additionally, i might have thrown a gift or two under your tree(s -not sure if singular or plural is correct. maybe both?). I'm trying to gift everyone posting, so yay for that :D

I will ask for the thread to be closed in a week's time, but i will (try to) make sure not to forget anyone.

Actually, yes, i am trying to write more about less known stuff, but big names will also make an appearance because it can't happen otherwise.

- love your honesty. i also barely have any time left to watch things or read stuff. It's more of a challenge for me to do it, to improve my vocabulary and imagination. Also to 'rinse' my brain from my job which can leave me with little to no time at all. /sigh

rule no.4 means that if people want a gift from me, they need to post here. XD and that it doesn't matter what they say ;p

I really have to update my blog ObscureJourney and my review site BeingObscure. French speakers can read my reviews here.

- I would actually recommend that you do not review things like Harry Potter, the MCU, Star Wars, Twilight, Divergent, The Giver, or the Hunger Games. They're not exactly obscure, and I wouldn't expect to find them on a site called "Being Obscure". That would probably disappoint me.

Everyone who reads books/watches movies has already seen or read them, so the only point in reviewing them is to start a debate about them. Since everyone has an opinion about them, this is the gateway to wank. Besides, there are hundreds of sites devoted to these stories.

The only really popular things that I would recommend are Gravity Falls and Twin Peaks, because not enough of the right people have seen them--and they focus on the obscure.

Instead, I would advise you to recommend things that do not fall into the category "Everyone's already seen and/or read this, unless they decided on the basis of what everyone else says that they don't want to read or see it."

Here are some things that I really enjoy that too few people have watched or read:

The television show Profit, starring Adrian Pasdar. (It's dark, though. Very dark.)

The Foreigner novels by CJ Cherryh. There are around 20 of them, and they're still awesome.

The Infomocracy series by Malka Older.

The Wild Kratts cartoons on PBS Kids, which are incredibly educational even for adults and teach you how to see animals you may have never thought about before in an entirely new light. As someone who loves all cats and adores weird wild carnivores--I never thought I'd be impressed with a hamster.

Seanan McGuire is not an obscure author, but people who are looking for something to read after they've exhausted the YA fantasy shelves ought to be introduced to her.

Everybody's read Uglies, but Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan series is amazing and I'd say that even if there weren't a thylacine in the story.

The Circle trilogy by Sara Elfgren.

  1. I mainly read webcomics so I'll recommend some favorites here: Castle Swimmer, Satan and Me, Heir's Game, Shootaround, Lore Olympus, Crumbs, Four Leaf, Circuits and Veins, Cursed Princess Club, Aerial Magic, Boyfriend of the Dead, # Blessed, Muted, # muted, unORdinary, Alice Elise, Lumine, Flower Pot Crew, The Botanist, High Class Homos, Watermelon, Mage & Demon Queen, Meow Man, and My Dragon Girlfriend. There's also a manhwa I like called I Don't Want This Kind of Hero. I love a good fantasy but I like comedy too.

Some shows that I've also enjoyed recently are Schitt's Creek, The Dragon Prince, She-Ra, Tuca and Bertie, Killing Eve, & I just rewatched Avatar: The Last Airbender. I also watched the new Charmed and Legacies a year ago. Some anime I've enjoyed in the past year (or two) are My Hero Academia, Haikyuu, and Yuri On Ice. If you're interested in podcasts I have some good recommendations for those too!

  1. I suggest arranging the drop down menus a little differently. Right now it seems like there are just so many subtitles it looks confusing and busy. I'm not sure how you would change it though I'm not talented at web design 😓

I would prefer gifts to be sent with the gift center so I can remove them from my wishlist!

Site suggestionwise I think making subcategories would be better so like movies: horror movies, comedies, etc, maybe an obscurity rating too would be cool BOARD GAME RECS WOULD BE COOL TOO
