I try to watch one horror movie per day every day of October, and I've never succeeded in my life but I try again every year because it's so fun. Sometimes I round it out to 31 movies for the whole month so I can skip a weekday and do two on a Saturday night. I've still never succeeded doing it that way either. :P But I'll post what I'm watching this year and if anyone wants to join that'd be rad, or just share what fun horror movies/tv/books you're experiencing this October!

This year I'm using the inktober prompts to inspire picks but I might deviate from it if I am feeling like watching anything in particular.

Day 1: “Ring” Ringu (1998) I read that book this year and enjoyed it way more than I thought I would, so I loved the chance to watch the first film. Long story short, while both films have clunky bits, together with the book Ring is a wonderful piece of horror artwork. It's like performance art that every horror fan becomes a part of. I have a huge space in my horror-film-nerd heart for this series.

Day 2: “Mindless" Return of the Living Dead (1985) Tried to watch 28 Weeks Later but my eyes where too tired for the shaky cam (can't stand the shaky cam style). Went with Return of the Living Dead, me and the girlfriend laughed through the whole thing, it had some great moments and if you can tolerate the gratuitous nudity it's a really decent horror comedy, definitely not as trashy or gross as one might think. It's stylish and goofy and a lot of fun.

Though technically I failed "mindless" since the zombs can talk!

Day 3: “Bait” A Quiet Place (2018) Got a little creative and tried to guess at a movie that might have some kind of bait or trap, and I watched Quiet Place. Not quite “bait” but pretty close.

It was a nice little film, not as spooky as I wanted possibly because I love strange creatures too much to be afraid by default (unlike ghosts and zombies, which will always always frighten me haha). And they where very very cool creatures. But the idea of the film was neat, even though I was just watching on my couch at home I was trying my best to be so so quiet the whole time, it really makes you wonder what you'd do in that situation, how long you'd survive, what decisions you'd do the same or differently than the main characters.

Bonus Suspiria (2018)

Watched this really late in the evening with my girlfriend, wasn't sure what to expect but I really liked in, in fact I like it more the more I think about it. My only complaint is how muted it felt- of course I am influenced by the original, vibrantly colored as Dario Argento's style is. But I dug the style, the acting was almost all flawless and immersive, and the story was stunning.

Day 4: "Freeze" The Last Winter (2006) I love a good icy horror film, any kind of "trapped in the snow" trope is so great. It probably made a pretty enjoyable experience of a kinda average film. The message behind the film is pretty good, thawing of the permafrost is trouble and who knows what could be in the ice waiting for us to stumble across it? The buildup was good, scares and cinematography good, but it never quite sticks the landing. Not much of a climax.

Once again I've failed the prompt though- "freeze" was the goal, but the primary conflict of the film was the thawing of the arctic. xD

Day 5: "Build" Still looking for a movie for build! :P So glad I got Suspiria in as a buffer to keep the numbers up.

Day 6: "Husky" Children of the Corn (1984)

I had low expectations so I put it on during chores and doing emails for work, but I ended up kinda digging it! I really didn't expect it to be fun, I've seen some atrocious reviews. And the acting is a mixed bag: a combination of kinda funky youths who just aren't great at it, and the 1980's acting vibes which always seem kinda dorky to me. But it was still a cool movie, maybe that even added to the atmosphere for me- and honestly the bizarre corn gods and weird faux-spiritual stuff was not as cheesy as I thought. It was kinda weird and disturbing. So overall it was a surprisingly good film.

Gonna try to watch a second one tonight, possibly catch up on "build" if I can find something that looks good...

Cool! Not watching anything in particular, but youTube recommended me Great British ghosts or something, so i watched those. It's a TV show in which the hostess visits haunted places - inns, hotels, former prisons... to hear stories. They don't particularly try to catch ghosts on camera or on record. The episodes are short - 30 minutes or so. Some of the places are more active than others.

I really have to update my blog ObscureJourney and my review site BeingObscure. French speakers can read my reviews here.

That's a really cool idea using the Inktober prompt list to inspire you! I have certain movies/shows I watch for Halloween every year. Most of them aren't super scary or anything but they're fun and have become tradition for me.

Movies: Hocus Pocus House of Dark Shadows The Nightmare Before Christmas Beetlejuice Frankenweenie

Shows/Specials: Dark Shadows (1966 series) Invader Zim Halloween Spectacular of Spooky Doom Are You Afraid of the Dark? (original series -- although I've been enjoying the reboot too)

Shows like My Haunted House, Paranormal Witness, A Haunting, etc are always on in my house too, haha. I'll also watch anything I randomly catch on TV. Just saw Annabelle: Creation for the first time yesterday -- now that was a spooky one!

"We do have a lot in common. The same earth, the same air, the same sky. Maybe if we started looking at what's the same instead of always looking at what's different...well, who knows?"

I wanted to watch American Horror Story all the way through, but I can't get the FX website to cooperate, so I'm watching Buzzfeed Unsolved instead.

Does that count as spooky? :D
