Does anyone have any recommendations for spooky books to read this October? I LOVE all things horror.

This is more a mystery than a horror, but it takes place over Halloween, but if you like Murder, She Wrote at all, Murder, She Wrote: Trick or Treachery is a good one.

Here are some great horror books I’ve read the past couple years! I will try to think of some more. Do you have any good recommendations? I am constantly searching for the next scary book to read.

Wilder Girls by Rory Powers A tender and disturbing YA book that doesn’t shy away from the body horror. Kind of like Annihilation (haven’t read it yet but I heard that’s a good spooky one as well). Wilder Girls is bleak and surreal, it gets harsh and there is a lot to love from a horror perspective.

The Ring by Koji Suzuki A real classic, much better than the films at this point, though it has some really heavy themes and tw for sexual assault. A beautiful and tragic story that is great if you’re the type of person who loves watching horror movies. I was surprised at just how much I liked this one. It’s a ghost/curse story and also has some cool themes of psychic investigation, set in Japan.

Zone One by Coleson Whitehead Adult zombie novel that goes at a slow pace, follows one character as he simultaneously witnesses the fall of their safety zone and remembers how the zombies first took over.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan YA zombie apocalypse novel, the setting was kind of lush and weighty and while it still has some angst I thought it did a great job setting the scene. Eerie and twisted.

Storm Cursed by Patricia Briggs Horror romance, actually part of a paranormal romance series. This one as a stand-alone has witches who get their power from torture, and there are some really intense scenes of investigating the aftermath of that. Also, zombie goats. This one is more lighthearted but perfectly on theme for the Halloween season.

The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling Survival horror, one woman on a solo spelunking and cave diving journey must survive not only the strange creatures and harsh environment, but also her increasingly suspicious handler who she only knows as a voice on the radio directing her where to go.

There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins YA stalker/spree murderer terrorizing teens during the fall season. It’s a quick read, snappy paced home invasion with some teen angst thrown in.

The Shining by Stephen King His best book by far, and the most terrifying, and if anyone is going to read only one King book, read this one! Haunted hotel needs caretaking over the winter, and a family moves in as the last guests and staff move out. Things get eerie and then they get insane.

Edited to add: I forgot I responded to a different horror rec thread a while ago, here are some other things I mentioned there in case you didn’t see it, and because I like to see all my reds in one place lol

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James was a lovely, eerie ghost story and murder mystery that I’d recommend for anyone who likes classic New England hauntings, combined with a little crime/detective mystery.

Beneath the Mountain by Luca D’Andrea is another murder mystery/thriller with some horror minor vibes. Not too much action because the murder being investigated is 30 years old, but it sure is a grisly one. But it keeps a good pace and it’s easy to read, and the scenery is just gorgeous.

I didn’t personally enjoy Lakebridge by Natasha Troop or The Devil You Know by Mike Carey but they might be in the right vein for you: they’re both murder mysteries with dark supernatural elements, and part of a series so if you do like them you can find more by the same authors.

The only other horror book I’ve loved recently is The Beauty by Aliya Whitely, though it’s nothing like any book I’ve read before and quite bizarre. Nothing like a classic King novel- it challenges a lot of concepts and honestly it&;s one of the most bold, daring books I&;ve read in my whole life. I loved it and I think it deserves more recognition, even if it&;s not a standard horror novel!

Thank you for all the amazing recommendations. I will look into them.

One book that came to mind for me that I really liked was called Hunted (The Shadowing ) by Adam Slater.

"Once every century, the barrier between the human world and the demon realm begins to break down. Creatures gather, anxiously waiting to cross the divide, to bring death and destruction from their world to ours. This time is called The Shadowing."

It was a short read, but like I said, I really liked it.
