So I play Subeta regularly, more on the check-in and random stuff versus something with productivity like organizing events and pets. Over the past month and a half, I've been getting more active in planning contests and finally working towards some of my pet ideas/storylines. So I go to post some requests for art freebies, and after some replies, I've found out that a website that I used to host some of my images on and place some random story details has been permanently shut down. The problem is... I haven't saved all the images on my laptop.

So... basically I've lost about a dozen or so artist-curated images for several of my pets. Basically, the lesson is: SAFE YOUR IMAGES ON YOUR LAPTOP TOO.

(I plan to go through some of the old posts and try and find if I can get the original images that I didn't save)

for all wondering, the site in question was tinypic, and it closed around 4 days ago, or maybe 5?

sorry for your loss, you can always ask the artists if they saved a copy- i know i hold onto my commission pieces just incase stuff like this happens for a time probably longer than i need to.

but yeah, always good practice not to rely on 3rd party sites to keep images or text you hold dear, best to hoard onto your desktop.

The last day it was possible to access your files I found out it was about to close. I was able to download a lot of stuff and save it but it is a process to repair the code for every pet and profile that was affected. And there are other people that commissioned things from me that were also affected by the shutdown. I think we all lost stuff. I certainly didn't find everything that I needed.

In short, I understand how you feel :(

I knew tinypic was shutting down and it really sucked, because so many people lost so much stuff due to just not knowing. But, honestly, this is a very valuable lesson; do not rely entirely on 3rd party websites to keep your images safe. Don't even rely on your laptop/desktop, as accidents happen and those things break. I honestly recommend getting an external drive of some kind as they aren't that expensive, and keep everything in there and have an online backup of your entire hard drive if you can. I've had the same external drive for 7-8 years now and it's worked great, and I have Carbonite as an online backup service but Backblaze is pretty good too I've heard.

Sorry that happened!

My problem is that at the time I do stuff I do make sure to keep a local copy. However, I've had computers die, or been replaced and have lost files to transfers. I could (and should) retrieve files stored online, but don't think of it, or don't even realize I've lost the files until an image host goes and dies or does something equally bad.

Its hard keeping track of all that stuff!
