I'm almost done with the 2011 anime and plan to watch the 1999 one once I'm done. Idk if I'll ever read the manga since it's so long, but I love the series/story/worldbuilding so we'll see!

I never got around to finishing it but I really enjoyed what I did see, the first 50 or so episodes. I was pretty hooked on it.

I think I might watch it next... my favorite shows are Death Note, Shingeki no Kyojin, No.6, Ghost in the Shell, Free!... what genre would it fall under? I'm not a big fan of frilly ridiculous anime but I need to watch something new after this.

HxH is definitely a shounen but it also deconstructs shounen tropes by showing us the grim reality of what it would really be like for two 12 year old boys to have to save the world themselves. It isn't grimdark every second and there are a lot of jokes, lighter moments, and genuinely sweet relationships between characters, but as a whole it starts off very lighthearted and slowly turns the shounen genre on its head. Idk how else to describe it but if that sounds like something you'd be interested in it's definitely worth a try. I can't guarantee how easily you'd be hooked since it starts rather slow but you later realize how important those slower moments were to developing each of the main characters (and later completely subverting the expectations you had about them).

It never occurred to me that I should be looking at other manga to watch based on genre facepalm but that sounds dope. I don't mind shows that start off slow as long as they provide for good character development and a well-crafted plot :) Thankya
