This is a temporary thread for now because at first it'll be completely disorganised.

I'm taking both CW and non-CW suggestions for makeups that actually look GOOD on bases that:

  • represent IRL people of colour (top priority)
  • are nonhuman skin tones (secondary priority, because it's fun to do and I love doing it, but nobody's feelings are going to be hurt if they can't find makeup that looks good on avatars who look like them.

Non-CW suggestions are important because you shouldn't have to be able to afford CWs to make a pretty avatar that doesn't look like a white person. CW suggestions are important because CW makeups are often the worst offenders when it comes to "looked great on the preview image, looks awful on my avatar" issues.

The goal is to have a good thread like Mackenzi's hair thread that I completely adore.

Feel free to ping anyone and everyone who might contribute or be interested. I am doing that and if you don't want to be pinged to this thread, let me know and I'll remove your name.

Personally, the biggest annoyance for me is people putting stray white pixels in things to make avatars on bases 1-3 sparkle. I like and collect Tartelette/Zanoya's Sakura Compacts because the white dots in them look deliberate on dark avatars, so you can use them for interesting makeup styles especially on fantasy characters, but I find blushes/contouring items with random white pixels here and look ridiculous on all but 3 of the available bases (even on the pure white base they don't do anything!) I'm gradually selling most of those off, because I don't even think the effect is all that great on pale faces.

There are certainly other issues too, like colours that just disappear on darker skin tones in items that aren't made in a wide range of colours.

On the positive side, some of the best makeups for avatars with dark bases are also some of the cheapest; I love the body blushes and shell glosses from the main shops, and am fond of the SubQ lip items.

(sorry if this is not ok, because this is not an item for sale--the rules are why I've never pinged the group before)

Disclosure: I only barely qualify as a POC. I'm adopted, probably 1/2-1/4 Asian or Amerindian ancestry, but you can only tell if you know what to look for, and was raised by a lily-white family. I have white privilege out the wazoo, and I have even more of it now that I'm older and my hair is no longer dark naturally, meaning that it is now usually some shade between dark blonde, deep pink, light brown, or purple. So if I step on any toes please feel free to let me know ASAP. I don't want anyone to think I'm claiming a black identity or any other identity for myself just because I like to make dark avatars. My favourite OC is dark-skinned, and I very early on (back when I was still on Gaia!) had the thought that if I was trying to make an avatar that represented me personally instead of a fictional character that I love, the frustration I feel trying to make her look good would hurt 2000% more than it does.

Awesome thread, thanks for the ping ! Full disclosure, white as driven snow here, but I sometimes use darker HA base colors.

I don't have a LOT of CW makeup, but my go-to for dark bases is , which gives a little bit of color, contour, and a subtle eyelid highlight as well as awesome lashes. Unfortunately, those blushers are suuuper hard to find. T___T I wish there were more colors!

I don't own them, but I think many of the colors work well on dark skin, particularly if you like punchy colors.

There are only a few color options and I'm not sure how hard they are to find, but I personally think all variations so of the work well on even base 10.

I usually layer and for more punch. Would love more sp suggestions that work on dark bases!

under other eyes/shadows can sometimes give more depth to the eye socket area.

I'm the ping group owner of DB and it's fine you pinged to this, as I'm sure there are many users in the group who will want to have access to this type of resource as it's being built. :)

Right now, the items that I personally own or have worked on that I use for darker bases are as follows; Freckles; Filters; These items slightly lighten the base which is unfortunate, but it does help give a better tone to the HA which is shaded kind of muddy. Body Toning; This item was specifically made to work with all bases, but if anyone feels a darker version should be made / etc please let know and I'll gladly make her a darker version if there are a group of people who want this :) Body blush; Makeup / Blush ; This is my item so if anyone would like it darker / in a different tone please let me know I am 100% all ears. Cover ups; Misc;

Those are my go-to items but I'll come back if I find more.

I am still on hiatus from CWs, but I DO plan on making a 'Deep Base' Section in my CW shop with more makeup items / etc that are specifically for people of color to use and are going to be listed as unlimited / etc to make it easier for people to get access to these items when ever they want. I will eventually (hopefully in a month or less?) be pinging the group to ask for suggestions / etc for what I should work on / what's missing / what's needed. I'll be keeping all items base price to try to help them be as affordable as possible. :)

Items I've done to specifically work with dark bases (all bases, but deep bases were the main goal):

Items I refused to upload if I was not satisfied with how they looked on dark bases:

I am 100% open to doing recolors of these items, if anyone is interested. If anyone has issues please come to me.

I'm excited and encouraged by you stepping out and organizing this kind of thread! I want to help however I can. I'll help when you're ready to make the "official" guide, by helping you claim the first three or four posts... I'm on discord if you want to connect that way. <3

Disclosure: I'm white, irish/welsh/british mutt. But I have naturally curly hair, so that's why I was all for making the big/curly hair wig that I love so much. had already drawn it, but when I saw it I needed it and bought it from her without hesitation. :)

Recently I spotted a release by Cathii - that looks good and has no white. But I couldn't find eyes I liked to go with it...

Subscribed to this thread and will spend some time today looking thru items, I am about three seconds away from going on a spending spree now even tho I was gonna save me sP for updated battle equipment for my pets. :P I've already added a bunch to my WL just from the few posts already here.

Thanks for taking the initiative to make this thread! It is def gonna need a lot of teamwork to make it happen, there's so many makeups and body detail items. This will be a lot to organize! :D Lmk if you want some assistance w the final thread. I echo what Poppy said, I'm down for helping with the first page of posts and keeping them updated. This is a really great project. I hope lots of ppl will be interested in participating.

Redundant I know but this is The Most Essential! :D Layering it over other makeup items helps make them work with the darker bases. Other good brown blushes:

These are both nice since they're on the darker end of the spectrum.

All of the freckle lotions are useful for a similar reason as the mocha body blush. Layering them on the face with other makeups helps blend in to more natural skin tones, and the lighter freckles help add some depth to the face and make the cheeks pop without looking odd. I'd recommend all four for anyone using bases 7-10.

The great thing about those items is that they make lighter colored makeup blend so much better, so you can use a lot of the brighter peach, pink and sparkly makeup much easier if you have something brown, or with hints of red/terracotta/purple to shade it with. In addition to reaper's suggestions of I also like

It helps balance how lots of the full base color filters lighten the avatar. Looks very natural when combined with other warmer/oranger colors to balance the hints of green in the item. It adds a lot of cool color and depth to base 9 and 10 especially.

Some other makeups that are nice: The SoFierce GlitterGlam Eyeshadow set all look pretty nice on a darker base, especially the purple one. The artist who did these did a great job; the fade is not awkwardly smudged over the whole face, the gradients use darker colors with with light accents, and the sparkles aren't solid white and vary in tone with each color. Even the golden one still works on a darker base. A+

Some makeup w/eyes that look stellar:

I will add more as I find more! Thank you, CW makers who take the time to preview on darker bases, it really makes a difference. If you want tips for making your makeup look nicer on darker bases, I would suggest avoiding using pure white for highlights, and checking where your gradient goes when you go to fade and blur the edges. On a pale base it can look like there's barely any color, but on a darker base it will be smudges all over the face.

i made to work with all bases purposefully, a lot of people have already listed my go to blushes for darker skinned HAs

i often find myself going for lighter colour items bc of the lack of brown, like on here:

Private Outfit Private Outfit

which can look quite nice, but it's a very specific look, and definitely looks like makeup as opposed to face shading. i was looking through my wardrobe and i realised my darker HAs have waaaaaay less face shading than my lighter ones, probably because of the lack of options.

so since other people already covered things that already exist, recommendations:

  • would love another line of canon body blushes in the same colours as that are more up by the eyes. i like using the dark red and purple ones too

  • moar black freckles. the "dark" ones barely show up on base 10. also then they're useable on colourful bases too

  • nose items!!! i love the influx of nose items but all of them are so teeeny. is my go-to for black characters (or any characters) with wider noses. i'd love to see more nose items with a wider range than the new sbq ones we've been getting

  • monolids? bats eyelashes at staff i mostly use cw makeup items layered over eyes to create that effect, but i don't actually own any of the items i use for that, like:

Private Outfit

(lighter base in this instance but monolids/cws that create the effect of monolids would still be great! especially since the items i used here wouldn't work on darker bases.)

  • in general face shaping stuff is my favourite and i would love darker versions of some of them!! for example i use allll the time and i would love a version that blended better with skins 8-10, as that one can look a little grey on them.

as a cw creator i want to make more of this stuff myself too, but i have executive dysfunction up the wazoo and also don't get very many people buying the stuff i do make so between the two of those it can be hard to move forwards.

You guys are GREAT. :D

Do you not use a lot of makeup because you just don't like to use it, or do you not use it because you're afraid it won't work?

There are two reasons why I pinged to this thread. One is that she makes some great blushes without white pixels. Her Supernatural blushes are amazing and I have incorporated them in several of my avatar bases because I use it so much. The other one is that she is the person who encouraged me to use blushes. I've always used eye makeup because I am very fond of eyelashes, heavily lined eyes, etc--but I tried a few blushes early on in my avatar making and was so discouraged that I quit. Well, her contests require it, and I learned. I started with the Body Blushes, the mocha that you use and the Plum that others have mentioned, but I also find that the Garnet Body Blush is really nice.

My favourite Ulalena blush:

Yeah--I pinged you because of the conversation we were having earlier, it was great. I agree with you about the Dragon Tail Makeups although I haven't got a lot of them, and the Ghostly Makeup Brushes are awesome. I use the Darkened one as my go-to because you can use it with any eyeshadow colour, and the Sunset one because I like pink tones in makeup a lot.

I think that released these and I know she did the Dragon Tail Makeups--maybe she would be willing to do more someday? Because the Ghostly Makeup Brushes are quite hard to find and I'm lucky I managed to grab these two when they came out.

& -- I am definitely willing to accept some help with this! I am so with you on the Shrine Maiden Ochre and the Glitter-Glam Shadows. (I'm Valiska#8268 and I can often be found hanging out on Sakura Caffe, Ale's "drunk" discord and The Custom Collective...)

wishlisting your freckles right now! If I weren't slotted on a ton of things I'd probably have just bought them, but I will get them.

I adore Coconut Body Oil, but since I primarily use base 8 I think a slightly darker version for bases 9-10 and the grey bases that I like to use for Homestuck characters would also be awesome. Thanks for your support.

Seul's cream cakes are really awesome for a number of purposes. I primarily use them for getting rid of the base eyebrows when I use the Dark base eyes, which I love and am terrified will be revamped, because the base eyebrows are cute but clash with a lot of other eye makeup items terribly. They're also useful for sorting out multiple hairlines when layering wigs.

I would love darker versions of the dolls because I use them a ton for giving avatars shading and contours, but I frequently find that I have to use a darker base to make them work, and since not all of the dark bases have the same warm/cool balance, it can be difficult.

the way to do an item link is as follows: "item=The Name of the Item" Except with square brackets rather than quotation marks. For instance: "item=Gift of the Universe Body Blush" in square brackets gives you: which is a pretty good blush/shader.

Did you mean ? That's a good suggestion.

We definitely need more noses. I like to layer the Able Button Sewing Kit you linked to with other nose items to create wider noses with more of a shape, but that's two layers. Some of the Bath Bombs are pretty wide.

is good.

The Bath Bombs are also great for AMAB characters who tend to have stronger features.

Monolids are a challenge, particularly since even the best monolid effect items tend to get wiped out by eyelashes. (Although this happens IRL too--I've had people freak out about models in Japanese fashion mags 'not looking Japanese' because their makeup widened their eyes, even though they looked plenty Japanese to me.)

For monolids, I like to use: and its sisters.

Here's Clarissa Xiao Mei Profit:

She is also using the cw which is one of the few eyelash sets that doesn't completely destroy the monolid effect.

I also like:

and its sisters,

as used on my FIAP model character, Kirin:

I layered it over a Two-Tone Eyeliner, but those are also good for Asian characters. And feline characters, since the pupils are not extremely rounded.

You can also use the Peculiar Leaf Items for this.

and are good.

Jamethiel Knorth is a fantasy character who is quite pale, but I used the grey one for her: here she is both as a seminude base (so you can see it without other makeup) and fully dressed. and

illustrate this.

I think the face shader you mention is absolutely fine on Base 8 but a darker one would be nice for bases 9-10.

I also think the muscle contour items in Go Outside are pretty great for darker bases. (Frankly, on bases lower than 4 they make your avatar look like a sculpture, not a person.)

Thank you for making this thread and thank you for the ping!

I'm afraid I don't have any new makeup recs – everyone has already mentioned the ones I use consistently – but I'll second recommending the Curious Little ___ Doll items! I found them recently and love the potential for layering effects.

I haven't delved into creating makeup CWs, but all of these items will be great to keep in mind if I do in the future. Also seconding what said: if/when I make makeup CWs (particularly makeup for darker bases), they'll be unlimited! No fun to see a makeup CW that looks good on dark-skinned bases and not ever be able to find a copy. :')

Yeah, I'm mostly afraid they won't work and a lot of the makeup around is meant ti work with the lighter skinned bases. The makeup from Subq works pretty well sometimes because it's all bright colors. The gold ones work pretty well especially, but I find myself not using them much and I haven't gotten into CW makeup for the most part.

oh i can help with nose items! are my go-tos for black noses. theres also for big/straight noses although it's definitely not ideal that one of the few noses like that is a before-and-after photo :/

is more borderline, although i think it could be used for more 'cutesy'/cartoony wide noses?

something else that i think would be useful but i'm not sure about is items with larger (but not overly-pouty) lips? like .
