Hello everyone owo
So I'm going to start a website/portfolio (featuring my make up works) for my school's assignment. I've never done this before so I thought I'd ask the creative people of subeta. I know the web hosts however I don't really like the templates they have. I'm wondering if I can go on (for example lets say format.com) and have my own HTML to code the layout I wanted?
sorry if the question seems noobish, but I'm really lost right now TuT
Also looking for someone who can code for me if its possible (can art trade or pay CSC. Maybe USD too)
I hope this is not too late. I recommend using wordpress.com as your platform. it's really easy to use, free, and it has many layouts to choose from, many looking pretty good for a portfolio too, as they're designed for a portfolio.
A host is when you pay to have sitename.com ; with the free option of wordpress, your URL will be sitename.wordpress.com I recommend using the free version until you get used to it, and because it's for the school project. You can upgrade at any time, but you have to pay for 1 year in advance, and it's not that cheap, not with wordpress. (last time i looked it was some US$70? per year? for me that's not cheap.
You CAN download a wordpress app? i forgot exactly what's called, to have your site hosted anywhere else, when you'd pay for hosting. In this version, you have access to many more site themes, with many of them being free to install. I cannot help you more with this blogging solution as i haven't used it. :(
I'm using over-blog as platform (see the link in my signature, lol). This is a French platform, BUT you have the option to translate it to English, Italian, and I forgot what other few languages. On this platform, you can pay monthly for the sitename.com URL format. However, the major downside of over-blog is that is has VERY limited options when it comes to the site's layout.
When you pay for the sitename.com URL on over-blog, you get paid when people access your site - from copyrights. I don't know if there's any other platform doing this, but last time i looked, Wordpress didn't.
I heard many people using squarespace as their platform, and there was another one whose name i can't remember. I haven't used those, but i remember their fees were pretty high as well. I also can't give any other details about squarespace, except that you can have a store as well. over-blog doesn't have the store option, and i think for wordpress it's a different more pricey upgrade (it has a few upgrade options).
I can't help with coding, sorry. if you have any other questions, i could try and answer. otherwise, good luck!
I really have to update my blog ObscureJourney and my review site BeingObscure. French speakers can read my reviews here.
Aw I have already made the basics of my site using format, but still thank you so much for your detailed explanation, I really appreciate it! ITs good to know alternative platforms, I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future <3
no matter the platform, you should be able to transfer your site to another platform. This is surely possible with wordpress. you first download the site (i think it will be an xml file format?) and you can then upload that file to the new platform. This is what i did when i switched from wordpress to over-blog.
im sorry i didn't see this sooner. :( good luck with your site!

If you already made your site in HTML, and just need somewwhere to host it, I can recommend Netlify as a pretty good host for that purpose https://www.netlify.com/

thank you so much. I believe i'll be building other portfolio sites soon since i have different types of stuff for school xD
Ahh thank you, I have a host but i was thinking about customising it with html and stuff so it looks fancy!
fancy is not always better, you know that, right? (less {details} is more{elegant}) ;) a fancy looking site will distract from the images/art itself. i saw many people/artists using a plain white background. the "fancier" part was how people would see the next image. some had them showcase with a slideshow, like on the computer. i think that looks fancy.

i literally have a blank page with thumbnails for people to click on LOL!!!!! I was thinking bout something like a slideshow!
thumbnails sound good to me. i actually prefer those ;p but since these are for school, you might want to see what are the preferences of the teacher noting you ;)

Highly recommend W3Schools for specific coding needs. It shows how you to the coding for... anything, really, in easy, simple steps and walks you through it then gives you a place to practice it to see how it comes out.
In my web design course at college, we were encouraged to play about in that site because so much wasn't included in our textbook at the time.
